It has become apparent to me that journalism may very well be the right path for me. This is troubling to me. I have never before experienced such a moment in my life where I can say something in definition regarding my future. If a man only has his writing and thoughts, what happens when people decide not listen and not to read? Would my existence in the work force become meaningless? What I am trying to say is: I'm scared. Is that normal?

That's a tough line of business man. I'd be scared.

It's normal, but it also means you've got a hard road ahead of you for the reasons you mentioned.  My suggestion is to look for an internship once you've got some classes under your belt.

My thoughts exactly. Then again isn't any line of business tough until you make something of it?

I envy you man, I wish I had a realisation like that.
Look, the best way to start once you realise your calling is to talk to people in the know. Go to your newspaper or TV station and see if you can talk to some journalists. Ask them how they got into their profession, ask them what they do, ask them what makes a good journalist and things of that nature.
Both my parents were journalists, my Dad is now considered the best media relations expert in the country because of his history in journalism. I'll talk to them tonight to see what they reckon, although journalism has evolved a considerable amount since their day.

Of course it's normal to be scared.  It's when we are outside our comfort zone and confronted with foreign emotion and thought that we grow as humans.  Embrace it.

It's particularly difficult because it will require some level of falsehood and schmoozing I would imagine. It's like the art world - you need to know the right people to get the good gigs...

Right on. Thanks.

I agree. I suspect I need a good challenge.

I fear you might be sorely disappointed if you intend to actually be a journalist and not an editorialist masquerading as a reporter. All too often today, journalism has succumbed to attempting to provide entertainment rather than report facts in their proper context.

But if you can pull it off, maybe others will follow and journalistic integrity will cease being an oxymoron.

what i've wanted to be since I was 6:
astronaut
marine
airline pilot
biotech engineer
physicist
nuclear engineer
businessman

And now as a Junior in high school, where we start doing all this college crap... the only things that have stuck with me are Marine (Army soldier actually), biotech or biochem stuff, and business.
