I've never done this before, but I have put together a list of parts for my new computer.
Any tips from the pros?

Buy a different brand of the 8800GT like XFX or EVGA. Buy a more well known brand of power supply too like Corsair or Thermaltake.

yeah, the 9600 is out, but is said to be comparable to the 8800GS, only half the shaders.

And on the PSU, which brand has the best? :p

I would go E8400, invest the saved money in an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and overclock a bit. You need the new fan, as the Intel stock fan is terrible.

Evga and XFX has lifetime warranties, Evga has great customer service and a step-up program as well.

I would really recommend Evga over XFX.

Get a SMALLER PSU, unless you plan SLI it's WAY too much. I'm running my 8800 Ultra on a 700 watt PSU, you could easily go to a 650 watt.

kk thx for the tip. Do you have a link to a easy guide for CPU overclocking for nubs like me?

Anything else? I'm thinking towards compability, I'm not really 100% sure the parts even fit together

Everything should be compatible. However, I would recommend getting an 8800GTS 512 over the 8800GT.

Looks good to me, but you might wanna go for the 9800 GX2. If not that (since it's apparentely being delayed), the 8800 GTS G92.

Besides that, everything looks good. That case has one big ass fan.

Alright man, your call. But those newer cards don't require anymore than 650 watts nowadays. That money could go towards other upgrades..

I think I'd go for a quad core depending on budget constraits... software is becoming more parallel as time goes on and quads will only benefit from this... Also, I'd highly recommend OCZ for a PSU manufacturer... Expensive but worth it. Also, over clocking is over rated. There's something to be said for stability. My machine (amd 64 x2 4400+) is fast enough that I've not even messed with it yet. Yours will be even faster... At some point minor increases in GHz don't actually help performance much and put undue stress on your components. Just not worth it to me.

why does everyone suggest getting a quad core all the time? Dual cores have been around a long the time and it still took a long time for two cores to be effectively used. There aren't very many applications that can effectively take advantage of a quad core yet.

why vista 32 bit with 4 gig's of ram? If your going vista might as well go 64 bit.

Go for the 64bit. What makes you think 32bit is better for gaming? It's not. And 64bit supports all that 4GB ram.

Ummmm... I can quote as many ppl who have 64bit OS and we have absolutely no problems in gaming. I have personally used 64bit Vista for 4 months now and it is all good.

edit: tell me one game that doesn't work on 64bit but works on 32bit and I'll try it.

There is no need for workarounds. I have installed total of 0 workarounds.
64bit OS has emulator to run 32bit software on it. But you do need different drivers and stuff like that. Some programs might not work properly but there are only very few of them and I have always found a similar one for 64bit.

*supports >3.5GB ram
*can run 64bit software (a bit faster)

ssmall example what games I have tried in 64bit:
BF2142, Source games, Crysis, COH, COH: OF, COD4, C&C series, Stalker, Rainbow six - Vegas, MOH: Airborne.......
