Once again, this proves to be nothing more than a sensationalized bit of news that some people here at bf2s.com wish to evoke terror of the Islamic 'threat' in the Western world. You are all crying foul about nothing.
Firstly, as one poster mentioned, this is an isolated incident. It is not creating a political scandal, or enforcing political change. It isn't denying the freedom of any non-Muslim, or causing any of you any grief. If we actually examine the situation, it is only the Muslim family that has been affected. They are the only ones. Perhaps other Muslims might be outraged, however few (as it is deemed acceptable for most Muslims), but how can you complain when absolutely nothing has been done to any non-Muslim?
They aren't forcing action. The article does not indicate that your food will be drastically changed to "appease" Muslims or anything. The Muslim family is merely finding fault in the apparent lack of indication that an ingredient was not listed that they disagreed with. They now choose to throw out their potato chips and not eat them anymore. What is so frightening about that? As the article said, for most Muslim families, the trace amounts are not significant, and it is not a problem. If only a small minority find fault, how can this be any threat? To call it that would be an exaggeration that is unjustified and dishonest.
It is a perfectly natural and normal complaint. It is absolutely justified that they felt wronged. The reason why many of you are so disappointed with this story is because of the Islamic bogeyman that you have all created in your heads. You are creating a caricature of a massive Islamic threat that intends to take over the Western world, using stories like this for evidence, but this story lends no credibility to you at all. This incident is no different from a vegetarian discovering that a product that they have eaten contains traces of meat, or the man allergic to nuts finding out that traces of peanuts were present in his meals that were carefully selected so that he not suffer from a medical problem. It is the producer's responsibility to inform the consumer of what is contained in the product. These analogies will be like the Muslim family- Outrage at the lack of information available, and will not purchase the product any longer. It is the consumer's right, and the family is justified to disapprove of the miscalculation.
