Sounds a lot better and less isolating than an actual Long Fence

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7260179.stm

A high-technology system to control the US-Mexico border with cameras and radar instead of a physical fence has gained government approval, US officials say. The $20m 'virtual fence' already covers 28 miles (48km) of the border between Arizona state and Mexico...

..."I have spoken directly to the border patrol agents... who have seen it produce actual results in terms of identifying and allowing the apprehension of people who are illegally smuggling across the border."...

...Its technology - including 100-ft (30-metre) unmanned surveillance towers equipped with sophisticated sensor devices - is capable of distinguishing people from cattle at a distance of about 10 miles (16km). The system's cameras and radars are powerful enough to determine whether people are carrying backpacks that may contain weapons or drugs.
Sounds badass.

I'm fairly certain that they'll have large amounts of patrols.

I wish the article was clearer on this, but I figure they can't be dumb enough to just build the towers and hope those alone deter illegals.

an actual fence is a waste of tax payers time and money.   that will deter zero.  I mean, when you got people going through tunnels underneath city streets and sewers, how effective do you think an actual border fence would be.

This is a much more practical and effective approach that will most likely see positive results.

Doubt a tower alone, especially unmanned, will deter illegals.  Even once they figure out that they have the radars/sensors on them, they'll still keep on coming.

Yeah, if we could find what they fear and implement that into a border, that would be cool (and probably effective). Again, sorry to hear about your issue with your business ATG.

Manned border surveillance is one aspect of border security.  As long as thousands of cargo containers enter through our ports without so much as a glance, our border not be secure.

Fighting government apathy in regards to illegal immigration would work so much better than focusing on high-tech surveillance equipment that probably won't even be implemented in any large-scale, concrete way (IMO).

Start a war with Mexico and become arch-enemies, just like Pakistan and India. Or Scotland and England, or North Korea and South Korea. That'll force the governments to create ridiculously highly militarised borders

I vote ATG to firebomb Tijuana
