114 degrees is a bad temperature right?

New computer was working fine for a bit, but it was gradually degrading in performance. I was trying to figure out why this was when it reset on me. The damn thing is overheating.

Got speedfan, installed it, got temp2 as 100-114 degrees before it shut down. Everything else was fine.

I had the same problem when initially putting the computer together, except it shut down in seconds then and now it lasts a few hours from a cold startup.Fixed it then by reapplying the cpu paste thicker. The brand is something dodgy but the only sort they had. Extreme someone or something.

So, this is most likely bad paste right? If so, can someone recommend a paste that will actually work?

Honestly, it's probably a bogus reading. Happens often. What label is beside the 114C?

Make sure the thermal paste hasn't separated or cracked away from the heatsink / fan. Arctic Silver 5 is fine.

Make sure you apply only a very thin layer of the paste. It is good to have it there but too much will cause you troubles. Something might have happened during the install because even the stock paste should be capable of keeping temps at safe range. Probably the cpu cooler has moved a bit after the installation and the paste has been cracked like kylef said.

It would help if we knew what CPU and cooler model you are using. Sometimes when installing a stock intel boxed cooler one of the push-in clips doesn't go through the mounting hole completely and the cooler doesn't touch the CPU surface like it should. resulting in overheating problems.

If it's F then that's perfectly normal. If it's C, then that's way too high and the temps from most modern CPUs tend to be very accurate.

You've given way too little info for anyone to be of any real help to you though.

Unless... is it even possible for a CPU to reach 114C and survive?

I don't think so, there's a threshold limit of 70C. With temps over 110 the motherboard would melt wouldn't ?

Well, if he said it shut down, it's most likely Celcius. I had a problem just like this...couldn't figure out what was wrong. Only safe mode would work. I tried booting it up normally and went into speedfan...readings were 95c, and then it shut down. I'm lucky the CPU didn't frigging melt.

Okay I bought new grease, replaced the old stuff and it's now running TF2 on all high 8xaa with about 100-200 fps. All is well (with my computer at least).

75c for Intel quad core is about the max. damage starts at 80c, automatical clockspeed decrease at 85c, immediate shutdown follows any higher temps.
