Work hard. Get good grades. Apply for many colleges. Good luck.

Find what specific colleges you want to get in, then find out what they like to look for to get in. Many different colleges look at different things.

Doing well on the SAT/PSAT always helps too.

It depends on the college you're looking to attend - some colleges have different prerequisites than others.

At any rate, first thing is to have good grades - GPA is pretty cruicial since it's the first indication of how hard/how smart you might be. Second, get decent SAT/ACT scores, they're the second indication of your intelligence. (Keep in mind that although many people can agree that GPA nor SAT scores are a very good indication of how smart you actually are, they're what the colleges have to go off of.) Third, it's always good to have some kind of extracurricular activity or work experience - it's not neccessarily about how many different clubs you're in, but how dedicated you are in your activities. Don't apply only to the school that you're looking at now, look at a lot of other schools. It's fine and dandy if you want to get into a certain college, but you'll always want some kind of safety school, a plan B if you will.

When you're actually applying, don't overexaggerate on what you've done, but if you must, add a little colour to your achievements. When writing your essays (if the school requires them), don't write a stuffy essay reminiscent of writers from the Renaissance, write comfortably. Your goal is to show them that you're a well-rounded individual. Also, if the school offers interviews, take up that offer - it's a way to show that you are genuinely interested in becoming a member of their "society" and more about yourself. That's actually the most important IMO - you being able to show them that you actually want to contribute to the school.

Edit: Then again, what do I know . I still have yet to recieve any rejection/admission letters from any of the colleges/universities I applied to. This is just pretty much my personal experience.

wow, my high school basically catered us on what we were supposed to do to get into college. We had to meet with the guidance counselor twice senior year and then we had to apply to at least two colleges whether we were going or not.

talk to your guidance counselor

Check out www.fastweb.com it helped me kinda

If you're in high school, ask your guidance counselor.
If you're not, I don't know what to tell you, but figure it out for yourself? :S sorry man

do well on the SAT/ACT. write magnificent essays. get phenomenal grades your first semester senior year. if you get maybed, schools will ask for grades from this semester. doing well ensures entrance, especially if you took many AP classes that semester.  grades don't matter so much, so long as you have at least a 3.8 weighted GPA. 3.8 unweighted for private schools.
