A Father and Mother Leave their Kids for the weekend, they tell the kids to behave and to listen to their older brothers and that their Uncle will be calling them regularly to check on them

They have 4 Children

an 18 year old

a 15 year old

a 13 year old

and a 6 year old

The 18 year old leaves the house for a few hours to go to the store to buy food and drink for the rest of the kids
The 15 year old is addicted to internetz/hates real guns and was home at the time of the shooting.
The 13 year old has just gotten his hunting permit and license and his dad has just gotten him a handgun that he practices with all the time. As he is done target practicing and getting ready to lock it up, the phone rings and he goes to answer it in the other room (his lazy older brother never answers the phone when hes on the computer), It is his Uncle calling to make sure everything is O.K.

The 6 year old likes to play with toy guns that his mom buys him,  finds the 13 year olds gun unlocked and fatally shoots himself.

Who is to blame?

The Mom?
The Dad?
The Uncle?
The 18 yo?
15 yo?
13 yo?

or the 6 yo?

13 year old. It is indirectly the older kids' faults too, because they should have been paying attention, but it is directly the 13 y/o's fault for being irresponsible and leaving it out. If you are going to use guns, you have to be responsible enough to never leave them out and accessible, especially around children.

Everyone. Except the uncle.

The parents should have locked up all guns until they came back from their trip. The dad shouldn't have given a 13 year old a handgun with actual ammunition.

The 18 year old could've took away the hand gun for safety purposes if the parents didn't, at least, while he was away.

Had the 15 year old answered the phone, the gun wouldn't have been misplaced in reach of a 6 yo.

The 13 year old should have properly put away the gun whilst on the phone.

The mom should not have bought the 6 year old toy guns, not until she taught everyone proper gun safety.

A sad story, a case where accidents can happen, but can also be avoided by taking precautions.

Wow, do you guys actually use your brains before posting ?

If I´m a Dad and teach my 13 year old son the use of guns, I will make sure to teach him to :
1. NEVER leave the gun unattended when loaded.
2. ALWAYS keep the saftey on, when not ready to shoot.

and most important
3. I would NEVER leave a gun for free accses around the house when I´m leaving it in the first place.

What? He had everything to do with it. The six year old pulled the trigger, and I guess if you want to look at it that then obviously it is technically the 6 year olds fault, he pulled the trigger. But when you use a handgun, it means you accept the responsibility to make sure nothing happens with it. You don't just get to leave it laying around, in the presence of children and within their reach, and just say "Oh, well, I didn't pull the trigger."
Example: The US leaves a few nukes laying around in Pakistan, easily accessible by enemies. Of course, these are used against the US. Are you saying the US is not responsible at all?

in Maine you have to be 14 to get your junior hunters license, but those kids usually already have guns and have shot guns before they go to their first hunter/safety class

The dad and mom (assuming joint parenting) is to blame.  The 13 year old is not legally allowed to own a handgun, and the dad supplied it.  The 13 year-old would be next, because he left it out.  I would then blame the 18 year old for not taking the guns away from the 13 year old if it was known that he was using them when he left for the store.  Then the 16 year old, because he was the next oldest at the scene.  I would blame the uncle and 6 year the same -- and that is very little, if any.  The uncle had no physical presence, and could not know what was going on and the 6 year old is not old enough to have any responsibility.

actually, the big problem here is that our 6 year old is uncharacteristically stupid. no six year old would think a real gun is the same as a toy.

I disagree.  Why would the 6 year old be to blame?  He's just a kid who plays with toy guns.  He does not understand the importance of gun safety, especially if no one was teaching him.

Eh, I don't know. I had toy guns when I was a kid that looked pretty real (they were old, from before when they had to be painted orange on the tip.) But really, it shouldn't even matter. The kid is not responsible for knowing anything about the real gun or how to safely handle it because he is not supposed to be handling it. The only reason he is is because the person who is responsible for it, the 13 year old, carelessly and dangeroulsy left it laying around.

that's funny since one of my earliest memories is of my dad teaching me not to touch any guns unless he was around, ever.

my neice was 5 when my idiot retard fuckwit of a cousin left a LOADED shotgun on my kitchen table with kids around... she immediatley found me and told me. kids aren't as stupid as people like to pretend they are.


i blame the parent(s) for not teaching them proper firearm safety. along with the 13 year old for not only transporting a loaded firearm from where he was shooting, but then leaving it loaded while in the home. and then leaving it unattended in the presence of small children.

Whoever let the 13 year old kid have the gun, the 15 year old for not paying attention, the 13 year old for not making sure his gun is in a safe place and unloaded.
The 18 year old couldn't have known this would happen, nor could the uncle. The mother and father would get partial blame for getting the 13 year old his gun. The parents should also have explained the situation with guns in the house better to every single kid in the family.

Oh, and did I mention I think it's fucked up that a 13 year old has a gun?

IF the 13 year old had his license he should know basic gun safety. The Oldest brother had no way of anticipating this, particularly when he is not the principle care taker. The 15 year old might as well not be there, all he could have done was answer the phone, and the gun might just as well have been left somewhere else while the 13 did something else. I would say the 13 year old is to blame for not following basic saftey procedures, particularly the blindingly obvious one of leaving a loaded gun with the safety of in the reach of a six year old.
