Quick question/discussion.

I've been reading and it seems that Raptors aren't as fast as they're said to be. I've currently got a 250gb samsung (I know, lol) so virtually anything would be an improvement.

I've been constantly upgrading my current rig (From p4, 512mb)  to the current (C2D 2gb) but plan to go for an all out new system. (Everything, case mobo, the works)

So my question is, should I just go with a 7200.11 seagates, or just raptors.

Both with will be in Raid 0.

Also, Space is not an issue, as I store most of my data on our home server.

I'm not really concerned with cash, but lets keep it realistic ($100-200).

go with the seagates. or one of both. two raptors is pretty much a waste of money, unless you have a hell of a lot to blow.

they're nice, but in reality it only buys you a little bit of time.

I am planning this rig for the summer, does anyone know if bigger raptors are coming out?

EDIT: If anyone knows how much of a performance boost between the seagates and raptors, how much realistically is it?

i don't know the exact stats but i went from a 74 gig raptor to a 7200.10 seagate (not raided) and honestly can't tell the difference.  The raptors just aren't worth the price/GB IMO. I traded a 74 gig dirve for a 320 strait up (both had pretty equal value) raptors just don't make sense with the speed of newer drives (seagate in particular)

If you really care about slightly higher benchmark numbers then a Raptor will be good. Otherwise just go with a Seagate/WD whatever drive. They won't cause any real problems and the main concern is data security.

the other thing to consider is your noise tolerance. the raptors make more noise which bothers some people but never bothered me.

raptors are a waste of money IMO. You won't notice much diffrence with a seagate. Go buy 2 x 500gb seagate instead of 2 x 74gb raptor.

I thought Western Digital were winning price-wise lately? like $20 cheaper than Seagate (500gb)

I have 2 x 74gb WD Raptors in RAID 0, however, if you like your music and videos, go with the seagate

Screw Raptors, if youre persistent, you can find SCSI drives, they go over 15.000 RPM and cost less than a 150 Raptor

maybe for 7200 rpm drives but you can get a 750 gig seagate 7200.11 for the price of a 150 gig raptor.
