I cannot get my computer to shut up. No matter what, vista will be doing something in the background that makes my harddrives work non-stop.

I have disabled every unneeded service. twice.
I have killed off all unneeded programs running in the background.
windows search is off.
windows security is off.
automatic restore point is off.

WHY MUST IT STILL MAKE SO MUCH NOISE?! This shit's going to destroy my hdd's within half a year if they have to boot constantly like this

Disabled UAC?
Disabled Superfetch?
Disabled Readyboost (if you use it)?

Defragmented recently?

Only things I can think of then are to check if your hard disk has SMART enabled and to run a check disk.

I do not have this and I know your system specs and we are quite similar. Could your actual drive start to be failing?

I would say upgrade to xp. There is no reason to have so much useless junk on vista and to have to uncheck them every time you restart or use an os program.

Another Vista hater that hasn't a clue.

Everyone stop whining about Vista. It's not Vista's fault you fail so much.

To OP: Check your SMART tables and make sure your HDD is working properly.

It may just be Vista doing its thing. Vista doesn't like to waste resources.

... Please, next time you start bashing Vista - I'd like to see some proof on almost any of that nowadays. There are little to no problems and anyone who claims that XP is an "upgrade" clearly does not use Vista to its full advantage, and should never have upgraded in the first place. Assuming you have used it for more than a week, that is.

are you sure it's yuor HDD and not your fan? as I remember my old win XP computer had one fan ( can't remember the width. something like 80mm) and it used to make one hell of a racket. my new comp has 2 120MM fans, one sucking, one blowing, and several holes to let more air in, and it'sice cold, and totally silent.

There are many of us who think it's an upgrade, protip: http://jrm.cc/page/4

Yeah, kylef. While I agree it is stupid to bash Vista without any reasons, but I also think it is stupid to praise it and ignore the clear flaws it has. It sounds like someone would say mac hardware > windows hardware. Fanboi'ish.

1. The drivers, ah the drivers. Driver support for basic hardware is in many cases worse than linux's support for ATI GPUs
2. It certainly isn't right that games run MUCH better on a 5 year old OS compared to a brand new.
3. The memory (and processor) hogging.
4. Control panel and such have been changed in an irritating way that makes it easier for basic users to do LIMITED stuff, and much harder for experienced users to do experienced stuff. I had to mess around a lot to find out how to delete default microphone drivers from a machine, geez. That should be easier, I can do it in 30 seconds on XP. Why change the working order that has been up since -95?
5. Startup time is ridiculous compared to XP.

yeah, there still aren't working drivers out for the 7900GT yet, and I'm not sure if there ever will be
