edit: i figured it out:

his parents have a mercedes benz that has a keyless entry and start system. the key needs to be close by for this to happen, via bluetooth connectivity.

well, it just so happens that his dad is a moron who doesn't make sure he has his keys in the morning and his mom is a moron who leaves her purse in the car. the key was in the purse which was in another car, so in the morning all systems were go. little did moron dad know, he didn't have the key! so when they came out after work, it didn't let them in!

Well thats a problem because when the key is near it automatically unlocks and starts.
