BBC wrote:

Turkey is preparing to publish a document that represents a revolutionary reinterpretation of Islam - and a controversial and radical modernisation of the religion.

BBC wrote:

But the Turkish state has come to see the Hadith as having an often negative influence on a society it is in a hurry to modernise, and believes it responsible for obscuring the original values of Islam.

It says that a significant number of the sayings were never uttered by Muhammad, and even some that were need now to be reinterpreted.

BBC wrote:

Commentators say the very theology of Islam is being reinterpreted in order to effect a radical renewal of the religion.

BBC wrote:

According to Fadi Hakura, an expert on Turkey from Chatham House in London, Turkey is doing nothing less than recreating Islam - changing it from a religion whose rules must be obeyed, to one designed to serve the needs of people in a modern secular democracy.
Or will the Muslims reject it? Will it work, but only in Turkey? I don't think Saudi Arabia and the rest of the crowd will be too impressed. Are we seeing a true modernisation of Islam?

What are your thoughts on it?

Turkey is way ahead of the curve in regards to secularism in the islamic world.  Will it work?  Perhaps, but it will most likely be rejected at first

I was thinking it may lead to something similar to this:

Protestant Reformation, an attempt by Martin Luther to reform the Church that resulted in a schism, and grew into a wider movement.
Muslim reformation?

Christian Reformation happened 1500 years after the establishment of the religion. Looks like it took more or less the same time for Islam too, lol... history always repeats itself. I'd say we're still a couple of decades from it being more normal, but then again it's got more to do with economics than religion, as to why most people from Muslim countries tend to be more violent etc..

I always find Turkey strange. Ataturk is sort of its modern founder and believed in a secular nation which the military also see as its duty. Its intervened several time in elections and even staged coups to prevent radical Islamists, ultra-nationalists or communists from taking power (1960, 1971, 1980, 1997). There was concern last year over another election (An Islamist party was set to win) and the militarys response, I suppose the question is secularism or democracy?
