No just another BF2 bug, try deleting your bf2 cache and re-optimizing your shaders. Also make sure the card isn't getting to hot.

Nah it's a BF2 feature.

Your older card couldn't support this new improved shaders

Download SpeedFan and check if the GPU fan is at full load. They are often set on low RPM, so that they keep silent.
If so, put the fan on 100% when you go gaming.

RivaTuner also works for fan speeds.

Does setting fan speed screw up your pc somehow?

I just bought a Evga 8800GT 512Mb, what should I have the fans set at before I start gaming?

No, as far as i know, cards like such are designed to have the fans running at 100% for long periods of time.

wtf are you all talkin about?
This problem is caused by dynamic lighting...
Update to the latest Nvidia drivers or switch off dynamic lighting

Well 56C is not too hot for a GPU, but it's a concern if that's the temp at idle. To work out if the problem is heat related you need to know what the temp is when you get it warmed up in game and the artefacts start to appear.

I am not too tech-y but aren't you all making too big a deal?

The 8800 runs pretty damn hot. When I put my PC together I didn't have enough fan, and my 8800GTS was running like 79, even into the 80s at some points.

That worried the hell out of me, so I spend quite a few hours reading everything I could find on proper load temps for the card.
Never actually found a solid #, but many pages (including Nvidia) had said that 80c was fine under load. I don't like that, but I must admit for the short time I used it at those temps it worked fine (I was more worried about longevity though). General consensus was the 8 series runs hot, and was designed to be able to do so.

I think my load temps now are low end of the mid 70s.

if you have dynamic lighting and shadows and they aren't equal then you get those

like putting dynamic lighting on low and turn shadows off or something like that
you get those weird black flashes

just turn off dynamic lighting and shadows and it fixes it, along with making the visuals better

Was thinking the same thing, my 7600 idles at 54C, well within its temp rnge for idle, and the 8 series do run hotter, so 56C idle is not a cocern I would think.  Not like my card got any fancy cooling either, stock everything.  Blowing the temp issue outta proportion

Gee i see. My shadows is High but my lighting is on medium.

Update: Turning off dynamics wont help.. Still there.. Yesterday I did a reinstall of Bf2 but didnt delete the profiles/screenies and server configs. So could it be a driver issue? Some guy is using the same card as me but a different brand, got his drivers from his manufacturer's website and it worked..

It was reported first when bf2 came out, that this problem is caused by dymac light only.It was in Nvidia driver readme aswell. There is no other thing that might cause this problem. Delete cache in documents and settings/bf2 switch off dynamic light and try again.
make sure  your drivers is 169.21 for xp or 169.25 for vista.
