dont they give up half their payhecks in taxes?
Probably.....but it goes to stuff like Healthcare etc, not sure how it works in France. But it's probably similar to how the rest of Europe works. You know, Socialism etc..GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

That's what you get when you vote Socialism, although I dunno what kind of party Sarkozy belongs too
socialism is for the birds.
Yeah I hate that shit. I'm voting Conservatives whenever the hell there is an election around here. Although tbh, compared to what you have over in the US. All parties here are left wing socialists
your faultMek-Izzle wrote:

Not half, depends on your income - roughly one third goes to taxes that covers all kinds of things like health care, community infrastructure, garbage disposal, leisure activities like theater and other culture initiatives ... etc etc etcGunSlinger OIF II wrote:

I have always wondered why the french seem to be held in so low regard in the US. I mean, they contributed heavily to your war of independence. Yet - as indicated by the comments here - most Americans seem to think that the french are cowards. How do you figure ?
well, I sdislike the french for their actiomns during the 1950's and 60'sHudsonFalcon wrote:

and the french foreign legion isnt as bad ass as everyone thinks they are.
If u feed the french troops wine and cheese, they're happy regardless of country, heat, incoming fire or enemy movement.
I will not believe until their troops are on actual afghan soil....also skeptical on how long before they pull out once it becomes a political hot-potato for french politicians
There already are 1900 French troops on that very soil ...loubot wrote:

as well as the amount of french munitions that were captured during my stint in Iraq.
Chances are, if a person was killed by an IED, they were killed by french artillery.

...it comes from a few places. One was the way American GIs felt they were treated in the years following the war (although we will carefully not comment on the likely behavior of said GIs), which gave many of those GIs, and their families and friends, the notion that the french were haughty, stuck-up, unfriendly, etc. And their performance in WW2 (oh, and the blazing failure of the Maginot Line) opened them up to redicule. I have seen the French Foreign Legion up close in Bosnia back in the '90s; I do have a lot of respect for them. Also, French military equipment seems top-notch; it is too bad their political leaders will never let them use it. I think a lot of the humor also lies in our regard for the French Government.B.Schuss wrote:

well, I only read the short version at wikipedia, but it seems de Gaulle wasn't happy with the way things were going for his country in NATO, and chose to drop out. You weren't even born then.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

And as far as the weapons deal stuff is concerned, no nation has a clean sheet in that regard. Why point fingers ?
I wasnt born in the 1930's either. Does that mean Im not allowed to dislike the nazi regime?B.Schuss wrote:

well, because unlike 99% of the people who post here, french munitions in iraq affected me directly. I dont care if its a rational dislike. Its personal and well founded. Not from the perspective of a researcher but of somebody who was exposed to it.B.Schuss wrote:

well, if I remember correctly, a lot of european nations "performed" poorly in WWII, not just the french.imortal wrote:

Oh well, the french weren't really friendly towards us germans in the early years after the war, either. But I guess we all knew were that came from.
