...it comes from a few places.  One was the way American GIs felt they were treated in the years following the war (although we will carefully not comment on the likely behavior of said GIs), which gave many of those GIs, and their families and friends, the notion that the french were haughty, stuck-up, unfriendly, etc.  And their performance in WW2 (oh, and the blazing failure of the Maginot Line) opened them up to redicule.  I have seen the French Foreign Legion up close in Bosnia back in the '90s; I do have a lot of respect for them.  Also, French military equipment seems top-notch; it is too bad their political leaders will never let them use it.  I think a lot of the humor also lies in our regard for the French Government.
well, if I remember correctly, a lot of european nations "performed" poorly in WWII, not just the french.

Oh well, the french weren't really friendly towards us germans in the early years after the war, either. But I guess we all knew were that came from.
Actually, I also recall the German's have a pretty good attitude about it.  I was in the US Army in Germany in the late '90s.  We were conducting a "Manuver Rights Excercise" near the french border.  Reportedly, one of our units got lost and took a wrong turn.  They (the entire armored colum) was pulled over by a single Polizei (and now is that a statement for the power of the German Police?) and warned the unit that they were less than a kilometer from the French border and that (in the words of the Politzei) "The French tend to take a dim view of armored vehicles rolling into their country from this direction."

Classic!

well, I only read the short version at wikipedia, but it seems de Gaulle wasn't happy with the way things were going for his country in NATO, and chose to drop out. You weren't even born then.
I wasnt born in the 1930's either.  Does that mean Im not allowed to dislike the nazi regime?
no. all I am saying is that the french government today has nothing to do with the government of 1965. Or are you also disliking today's germany ( = me ) for the actions of our people between 1939-1945 ? That's history, isn't it ? Can't we leave that behind us ?

...but it's FUN to make fun of the French.  And, in our defense, they do make it so easy to make fun of them.

Did Germany drop out of NATO and supply Iraq with chem weapons and conventional munitions as well as aircraft?

if we dont know where we are coming from, we arent going to know where we are going.

I dont have to be born in the 1930's to know that I dislike nazism.  I dont have to be born in the 50's to not like the french government.  But I do have to be born in the 1980's to know what its like to avoid a french artillery round improvised to be an area denial weapon.

Pretty sure he meant that as "us," and not the U.S.  Actually, a lot of the socialist countries have mandated lower hour work weeks in an effort to force employers to hire more workers to cover the needed hours.  These are countries with unenployment in the double digits, here.

well, most of that probably was delivered in the 1980's when a lot of western nations, including the US ( but also France, Germany, Brazil, and others ), were quite supportive of the Iraqui regime. And by "supportive" I mean weapons and dual-use deliveries, not the WFP...
I can understand that you're not happy with the situation, but when you dislike the french for that, what are your feelings towards your own government ? Remember that story : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6932710.stm ?

Not trying to point fingers, just saying, you know...

truer words were never spoken. Funny you should say that though, considering later US foreign policy in the middle east. One day, you're friends, next day, you're enemies. The world sure is a crazy place.

as well as the amount of french munitions that were captured during my stint in Iraq.
Chances are, if a person was killed by an IED, they were killed by french artillery.
Oh god this is too easy but:

Chances are if you were a Kurd gassed by Sadamn in the late 80's it was American gas.

To easy I know. but its true.

I think France is great. Cool country with plenty of interesting history. But unless Sarkozy can reach an agreement
with the unions he wont be able to fix the economy and probably wont be re-elected. Which I think would be a bad
thing for France.

show me a source where "American Gas" was used by Iraq.

Private companies supplied Iraq with chemicals.  American companies were in the minority.  Most the corporations that supplied Iraq with "American Gas" were actually European.  Every post out of you is "america is the worst".  I would love to see a post where you say something good about my country.

youre right, its east to rebut when the other person doesnt delve deeper into the facts.  I bet the US gave bin laden money in the 80's too

He is just another whiny Irishman with nothing better to do but complain.  I will not sink to his level, I will praise Ireland.

I would like to thank Ireland for the internet.  It has transformed the world completely.
I would like to thank Ireland for GPS.  It has helped ships, planes, and cars navigate more safely.  It has also helped save lives.
I would like to thank Ireland for all the airplanes you guys produce.  You have helped make the world smaller and air travel safer.
I would like to thank Ireland for all the cars you have produced.  A very nice contribution to the needs of the world.
I would like to thank Ireland for giving millions of dollars to try and cure aids.

Oh wait....that is the US.

Well, you built the Titanic.  That turned out well.
