disable automatic restart. Should give you a blue-screen with an error code

Boot into Safe Mode (EDIT: actually if you are able to get into windows, you might as well do it from there)

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

Click the Advanced tab.

Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.

Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.

Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

enable boot up with both proc cores (msconfig-->boot-->advanced options-->number of processors: 2),
disable any startup items you don't need,
disable any services you don't need,
enable No GUI boot or OS boot information (msconfig --> boot),
defrag the drives,
disable any devices you don't need though BIOS (like IDE controller if your drive is SATA)

think that's it

got another one. make sure you're fully patched. There's been a lot of performance enhancing patches for x64 since it was released

Will the /NOGUIBOOT and /NUMPROC=2 work with XP as well?

yes

I think the equivalent of OS boot info is /SOS on XP. Shows the stuff starting like when you boot into safe mode

I also think its ram. When my PC rebooted itself, I took a memory stick out and it solved the problem.

run it overnight, doesn't matter that it takes ages when you're sleeping

Isn't it easier to just take 1 stick out?

how do we know that it's even a mem problem and not related to anything else? And which stick has (hypothetically) gone bad?

You take one out and try. He says its going good so far. Lets hope it stays that way.

If you take one out and it doesn't crash doesn't necessarily have to mean that the other stick has gone bad. The only way to positively know that it's a mem problem is by running memtest
