job ideas

so i'm getting pretty tired of my current job (making picture frames and the bitch work that goes along with it) because it's not interesting at all, and i'm not gaining any real experience there. i have a year or so left before i finish my computer networking degree, and i want to do something with computers; i don't know exactly what though

here's where you guys come in. what are some good ideas on places i can look for jobs that relate to computers? i would like to work my way up in the company/field, but i don't really know where to start. halp!

also, if you have any knowledge of this field, should i stick with networking, or should i try and take some other classes? i would prefer to be doing some kind of IT support, fixing computers, selling computers, etc. i'm not really interested in programming or graphics btw, mainly hardware-related stuff

Maybe look for an internship at a larger company? I don't know how much money you need to be making it, but it would certainly open up future possibilities.

Also, do you want this in DAST? I'm not saying it's in the wrong section, but I think you will get some more helpful replies there...

Didnt really give much choice in the job there. Unless someone can hire you without that degree, its hard to find something with computers that isnt boring, repetitive, etc.

Game tester seems to work if all else fails, but im not sure it will pay well.

If you do take this road (game tester), I suggest talking to Buckles, he was in this field not long ago.

work as hard as you can to get a federal job man. Security, benefits and good pay.

Federal jobs need computer people.

Sure, not a great place for PC stuff, but you can get DVDs and games for dirt cheap, and an LCD probably too.

Do what I'm gonna do, if I can't find a career job. The military will find something for me. I'm sure they'll give me something good if I already have my degree when/if I sign up to either the RAF or Navy.

That is unless, by the time I finish my degree, there is no Military cos the Gov keeps cutting the damn budget

I'm not really too sure but working with the feds or a government job would probably have good benefits and not bad pay. If you're looking at companies, ones like cisco systems would be ok i suppose? Also, oil companies are always open for tech people. My dad was the uk manager of conoco for 35 years and he said they always needed techies. Maybe try a company like shell, exxon or indeed conoco? Hope that helps

have you thought about talking to a few of your buddies who are also studying with you about opening a PC repair shop, i have a mate here in the UK who finished his degree and now owns his own shop, it all happened by chance really, i was having a few probs with my PC so he came round striped it and re-built it in less then a few hours, i gave him £30 and a we drunk a few beers, and as a joke i said why don't you stick an advert in the paper for PC repairs at home, so he did COST HIM £30 lol, but within a few weeks the calls where raining in, he had to take on his best mate from his computer course to help him, within a year he had to get a shop and the cash is rolling in for him. maybe he was just lucky that we live in a fairly big city and there are lots of students that need the PCs fixed.

Anyway good luck with whatever you choose to do man

This is how I see it.

You work for 5 days a week. 9 hours a day, 48 weeks of the year thats 2160 hours a year x 50 thats 108,000 Hours of your life. Divide that by 24 = thats 4500 days, divided by 365 = ahh fuck it I cant be bothered anymore.

Basically what Im trying to get across is this. I reckon you spend 2/3 of your working life in work. You have to be happy as you only live the once, you don't get the second chance at it.

Try and find a job that makes you happy and challenges you and if the pay is great its a bonus, however if you need to work to feed your family and provide the roof they live under take anything that meets that wether you are happy or not.

Hope this makes sence. I got guys that work for me who have done so for 40 years and are payed peanuts. Not ours or their faults, Ive been doing my jon for 16 years and regret not joining a nationasl comapny where you get the pension, guaranteed wage rise etc, however I was born to do my job, I work for my famly our business started in 1900 and established in 1912, how do you walk away from that for better money?

for better money and a better life for you and your familly, i would have walked away ages ago, one foot in front of the other is how you do it, being loya aint going to make you happy, BUT if what you are saying is that are happy and not just content then stay with what you are doing
