We've got teens killing people for no reason, last week I saw something on CNN about these two teens who tortured this mentally handicapped girl. We've got soldiers going off the deep end and throwing puppies off cliffs, we've got people starving and dying in civil wars.

What the fuck is wrong with mankind?

There were 15 people killed in three events last week in L.A.

It was hardly even news worthy.

I blame the government for setting the example.
They are corrupt. They kill. They steal. They have poor financial planning.

I really don't know I can imagine it's just a way of that guy releasing his stress. Note that this does not justify it in any manner whatsoever... but just a perspective. I can imagine that being in a war zone would eventually desensitize people to things like this.

@Blade, lol... idk man, you might see from my other posts I'm usually a strong advocate of harsh punishment for harsh crimes but... say the dude who threw that puppy off a cliff. I hate his guts for it but I wouldn't want him killed for that... that would put me on the same level as him... I'd rather want him to simply be dishon discharged and that he gets professional help for what's obviously troubling his mind.

I'm just in a rather pensive mood tonight

I blame the media for not reporting the important shit, apparently everyone's got to know what Paris Hilton had for lunch.

It may seem relatively small, but there is still good in society and the world - it's just not as obvious or blatant as the bad. Even if it isn't a story about someone selflessly sacrificing him/herself to save another person's life, there are good deeds going on everywhere - you just have to look a little bit beyond.

That was my moment of peachiness, but I understand you. I can't help but wonder why it seems like our society is going down the shitter, but then I later feel like we're still progressing, if only a little bit.

I agree. In the puppy example i dont think punishment would really help... He just shouldn't have done it in the first place.
As for crimes against people, sure a stronger punishment would help... but theres probly a way to avoid it. People arent born killers.

And yeah it seems the news only reports bad things happening, as if they're more important than the good things happening?

I should start a news station about all the good things that happen.

Aye, I recognize the good in society. My friends, my family, the guy who owns a convenience store near my school, my gym trainer. All very good people.

Don't forget this little gem:

A weekend ambush left a mother and her two sons dead and the father wounded, a grisly shooting and stabbing attack authorities say was carried out by the family's teenage daughter and the boyfriend her parents disliked.

That clip has actually left me pretty depressed the past few days. I was close to tears when I first saw it, not gonna lie.

And seeing this, it proves why - it feels as if the human race has no hope. I know that people have murdered people since the dawn of time, but not like this and in these fashions. It's horrid.

society is fine. your mind is being poisoned by the media. they have thousands of stories to choose from every day, and its no surprise that the ones found in print can mostly be paraphrased as saying "the individual man is dangerous, we need authority and supervision." gee, our closely allied govt and media corporations couldnt possibly find this message mutually beneficial... could they? u need to be at least slightly objective. go see humanity for yourself. have u witnessed a murder? have u been viciously attacked? statistically speaking, the answer is no. regardless of the list of scary stories the 5 monolithic media corporations decide to make u read each day, u need some realistic handle on what u are likely to encounter. bc the avg fantastical (yes, thats a word) news story is about as relevant to your own life as a blockbuster film these days. the degree of selection possible in news print rivals the creativity in hollywood (tho its really more repetitive than creative). in both cases there are countless stories to choose from, and at the end of the day, some executives get to decide what stories will remain in the sea of possibilities and which stories are going to bounce around all day in the echo chamber that becomes our perception of reality.

in other words:

nah, nothings changed. and look around, its not so bad. ur dwelling on an exceptionally depressing vid that represents nothing but one disturbed and probably sick soldier. there are million-year-old human fossils complete with fractured skulls and stone tool marks. we have indeed been committing atrocities for our entire prehistory (since before our prehistory as Homo sapiens sapiens, frankly). this doesnt mean the avg person is to be feared, it just means that we have an extremely wide range of behaviors, the widest known for any species. the most extreme instances of human behavior need not be held as representative of the avg person. it would make no sense, whatsoever.
