Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how my sixteen-year-old sister had a stroke. Didn't see that coming, did ya?
To those of you who don't think caffeine is a drug, I was once among you until a few days ago. I was at my computer last Wednesday (27th) around 9:30 PM EST and I heard somebody call my name. I took off my headset and asked if anybody was calling me and got no response other than the sound of somebody, presumably my mom, on the phone downstairs. I assumed she was talking to my grandma like she tends to every night and that I just heard my voice because of selective hearing. I went back to playing Audiosurf and heard "Travis get down here right now!" much louder than the first time. So I did. As I'm walking down the stairs, I see my mom in her bathrobe at the bottom and she says "The ambulance will be here for your sister in a minute."
So I'm freaking out and asked what happened? I run into my parents bedroom and see my twin sister laying down on my parents bed. She was completely numb on the right side of her body and entire face, and was speaking so poorly that you would have thought she was retarded if you heard her on the street. Her sentences were chopped up and slurred to the point where they were mostly indecipherable. She's normally a straight-A student, which was incredibly worrisome to see somebody of her intellect speaking as if she had an IQ of 60. (Not to mention we had the SAT that upcoming Saturday) I still had no idea what was going on but my parents told me to go wait outside for paramedics before I could ask questions.
To skip the rest of this boring story, she was taken to the hospital and checked out to be perfectly healthy. The doctors didn't know what was wrong, but we believe that she had a stroke as described by the link in the beginning of this post. Her symptoms were near-perfectly matching the illness, so it's most likely this. When she came home around 2 AM, she was perfectly fine and awake at 7:30 the next morning to go to school. At school, I asked her what happened since I still had virtually no info as to how it all happened. She told me that she drank three 24 oz. diet Mountain Dews and at least 3 cans of Brisk Iced Tea in a two hour period with no food. Seems pretty obvious it was a caffeine overdose. It's almost shocking that someone as young as her could have a mini-stroke.
The moral here is: Caffeine can be bad. Be careful how much you intake!
Side story: While I was freaking out over what had happened and waiting by the phone for info, I was able to get skilled at Audiosurf. It's good at passing time.
