Or at least something that would look good on a college app to an engineering school.

So I'm sure I'll be getting a job this summer, but I'd prefer to look at doing something that would better my resume over something that pays a lot right now...while I have a nice bed and lots of food waiting for me for free. Any ideas of something that a reasonably competent, hard-working young person would be able to get/perform?

I did an internship at a local university last summer, it was a lot of fun but the program I went through won't let you do it twice, so I would prefer something that is more in a real-world setting.

i heard college's and universities really value work you have done for the community, so maybe a job that might help reflect good community involvement?  I'm not sure if thats what you were looking for though...

Do I want to go give sponge baths to old people or read to little kids? No, no technical skill and barely any personal responsibility. Do I want to work for the city or a National Park? Why the hell not.

Basically I want something that has the responsibilities of an actual job (hours of a part-time would be best), but the pay doesn't have to be great. Bonuses for something industry specific, jut about any industry.

Try finding a local architecture firm or engineering firm, or even a contractor. You may be putting their files away and doing desk work, but working under someone in the field looks very good on your resume.

well depending on the type of engineering your going into....

im sure it would be tough getting a job at a mill or something but they usually have summer jobs.

Maybe a job at an auto shop for mechanical engineering

Do some work for your city if you want to be a civil engineer (even if all your doing is cutting the grass)

what college are you looking to get into?

As long as your math and science grades are up to par, theyll probably let you in

I got into chemical engineering with nothing on my resume but mop-tard at a retail store.

Most engineering firms want sophomores or above anyway, but you might be able to land a job as someone's bitch

Not really sure what type of engineering. Probably electrical, or I'll do something in physics or business. It's still pretty open.

Well, my dream college at this point would be Olin...but that's aiming a little high. Chances are I'll probably go to Texas Tech, which I should have no problems getting in to no matter what I do (top 10% of the class in Texas gets into any state school automatically...I don't even think I have to take the SAT if that's where I'm going). So this is pretty much for aiming for the stars, I could probably get Tech to give me a pretty sizeable scholarship already.

In that case, try to find someone who is already in the field to get you a job, applications will usually get you nowhere in this field.

If you're looking for something to help with your college resume, go with community service over something you want to major in.  Trust me, colleges love to see that stuff.

Otherwise, ask someone you know in the field you are looking for to point you in the direction of an internship.  They may or may not pay you, but you'll probably get the experience you want, and it will let you know if you want to continue in the field.

I knew a couple guys from highschool who went there to be electrical engineers

I had never heard of Olin before, didnt know full scholarships for everyone, which is key, its right there in Mass. didnt know if you had a relative in the area or not.

imo out of state schools are never worth the money (unless you can afford it of course) and the school has a 100% job placement rate

GL with Olin, im sure you'll do fine wherever you end up

I know a friend whose cousin is going there, I live in Texas.

I really don't want to go to A&M or UTA (mostly A&M) because of the absolutely insane school spirit there. Some people were killed a couple years ago at A&M when a bunch of students were supervising the building of a massive bonfire and it collapsed. I don't want to be brainwashed tbh.
