About 2.5 billion people live in the ridiculously underdeveloped nations of China and India, both of which are rapidly playing catch up with the western world. Citizens of both these countries will soon come to demand the exact same luxuries we in the west enjoy - reliable electicity and water supplies; a rich, varied and exotic diet; personal motorised transport; the latest electronics goods.

Wheat prices have jumped colossally in the past year. The price of oil has jumped likewise. And we haven't even touched the tip of the 'Asian Development' iceberg.

Can the world sustain the needs of so many people? Will it cause friction that will ultimately lead to a confrontation between the developed and the developing?

nations are going to slug it out like they did back in the day.  Countries that cant feed themselves will shrivel up and die and turn into somalia.

I have been talking about this for years.  The world is simply WAY over populated, and cannot sustain itself in it's current state for alot longer.

A massive kill off is bound to happen.  Be it war, virus, famine, something's gonna break.

Think about the amount of useless junk you've bought and never used! Everyone buys things like this. I suppose if everyone stopped doing stuff like this then they're would be plenty of luxuries to go around.

I'm not sure how many people will demand the said luxuries in China and India when most of them earn shitty salaries.

Well, I remember in the 70s that people were talking about how global warming was going to kill everyone by 2010.

This ain't new - everyone is always scared shitless about something.

Besides, it's 2008 and we'll all be dead in two years any way.  Might as well enjoy it.

nope. we're in the offshoot of the carrying capacity, which we have artificially extended with oil and cheap energy. within 20 years there's going to be a major war or other means of population control. its actually unavoidable, people WILL die. whether countries with no money and development stand up and fight for their lives or not is the only thing determining whether or not we have a war or simply a massive extinction occuring. this planet can only support about 3 billion people without oil, which is going to be mostly gone by 2035. say goodbye to peace laddies, we might see each other on the battlefield in a few years.

imagine what it must have been like to live during a time when the average lifespan was 40 years old.   we have it great right now.

I don't see how China and India would be classed as ridiculously under developed, but perhaps the increased demand from the massive middle class populations of China/India (apparently they have middle class populations bigger than the whole population of the US) would spur on new advances in technology. Historically speaking alot of breakthrough shit has come out of those countries so I wouldn't be surprised if a proper alternative to Oil etc.. comes out from one of those two either.

If you're pushed hard enough you'll find the answers, don't expect break throughs to come from Oil-Corporation owned United States though, I personally think the US is in decline and that in the future say 50 or so years it'll be China and India up at the top. Assuming that they don't destroy themselves over petty issues like Kashmir/Taiwan

nice pun, and i agree. of course they know what electricity is, its just whether or not they've seen it in their lifetimes (overwhelmingly yes) or not.
