we must judge people by the time they lived in.
But the principle still applies. Being a free nation, to many a "unique" nation given our birth, means we hold dear the constitution. Giving up those constitutional rights is no longer living in freedom. When our elected leaders give up said freedom, for pretended security, we deserve neither.
That principle spans ANY time and government.

Civil liberties are a luxury, I would gladly give them up for no particular reason.
If my country asked me to do that then fuck my country
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
So you're cool with random searches of your home? Providing documentation when you drive from state to state? You're ok with your phone calls being taped..domestic phone calls? If you have a problem with those things, it's ok that you'll be jailed or labeled a non-patriot and possibly made to be quiet? Civil rights are a mark of civilization's advancement..loss of those and you digress to the dark ages...hardly a luxury.CloakedStarship wrote:

You appear to have missed the gushing sarcasm flowing from my postIRONCHEF wrote:

why do I get the feeling that some people are always creating retaliatory threads or concentrate on certain topics ?
anyway, I think the question ain't specific enough. In general, though, I'd not be willing to give up any of my civil rights for my country. and, as others have alluded to, I'd hope that my country will never ask me to do that. Because if it did, it wouldn't be "my" country any longer...

this is the kind of thread where id generally post a dense block of text, but looking at the results of the poll, id be preaching to the choir. lots of good posts in here, im glad that most of us can see eye to eye.

I addressed that sentence yes, but that was in general.sergeriver wrote:

It really depends on what you're talking about here. Which rights, and to do what? Understandable if you're giving up some personal freedoms to voluntarily serve in the military, absurd if you're abandoning privacy or the ability to defend yourself for 'enhanced security.'
That's one of the stranger editions of that oft-paraphrased quote.Ganko_06 wrote:

Doing so would entail taking away what I like about my country, so of course not, as that isn't a place I'd like to live in.
