Can you cook an Egg on the top of Mount Everest ?

If so, why?

If not, why ?

A guess: the level oxygen is so low at that height it wouldn't be possible to make a fire?

no. boiling temperature and atmospheric pressure.
sea level = 212 degrees F or 100 c.

as air pressure goes down, so does the boiling point.
at 29,000 feet...the water would boil so low it wouldnt cook the eggy weggs.

or itd take forever and the water would be evaporating quicker....so youd need to keep replenishing the water supply..which would add a lot to the total time

A tad faster than i thought but you are onto it Dude

I was thinking of a very long extension cord but whatever ... nice scientific approach Schwarz

I think you could cook an egg... as in steam cook it. You try boiling water using a gas stove and all the water will evaporate, but I'm sure you could still steam it.

But if you're climbing Everest, cooking an egg should be the least of your concerns

I wonder if you could put the egg into a small pocket close to your skin, then while you are travelling to the top, the heat produced from your body over a long period of time might slowly cook it.

You and your bloody obsession with eggs

No I don't reckon you could due to lack of oxygen, unless you placed the egg and flame inside a controlled environment at the base of the mountain before you started your climb (try and picture a gas boiler or a solar powered microwave).

I wouldn't want to be part of your "Eggsperiment" as I picture me at the back struggling to lump this cooking device up the mountain while your in the lead telling me to hurry up.

Good question you ask though.

Obviously it's not a yolk.

(non-serious attempt)

no because the eggs would crack on the way up. as if you would be able to carry eggs all that way!

Good point and perhaps you didn't mean it but would the pressure crack them?

doubt it, the pressure is lower not higher.

Ahh ok.  I'm not into that kind of scientific stuff so I will happily take your word for it.

haha. it is quite easy to explain actually.

There is less above you than 8km further below -> hence less pressure (stuff pushing down on you)

No you could not.

But, could you cook an egg on a conveyor belt?

Do your ears pop when you go higher due to less pressure then or more?

Do my ears pop when I go underwater due to less pressure then or more?

Lol, way to ask questions i dont know the answer to

Well the further underwater you go, the higher the pressure (more stuff pushing down on you), so it has to be due to higher pressure.

And the higher you go the lower the pressure, so it must be because of it getting less.

The popping is maybe your eardrums adjusting to the new pressure? i really dont know, lol.

Thats all I've got, lol!

Ok thanks for the answers, you seem pretty switched on with that kind of thing.

It might be all you got but it's enough to help me figure it out, thanks.

I better hope I am switched on, as I am doing physics and chemistry as two out of four subjects this semester

If I'm not I'm fucked - 60% of first year engineering students failed at least one subject last year apparently...though that is probably bullshit. heh.

Glad I could (sorta) help

When you get higher, the air pressure outside of your ears is less than inside your ears, when the pressure is equalised i.e. when you swallow, the pop is caused by your eardrum moving back to its normal position as pressure equalizes. Same for underwater but vice-versa with the pressures

Thanks for that bennis, that was the last bit I just couldnt quite visualize/make up. I tend to be pretty good at figuring that kinda stuff out - like without even knowing I had a mental picture of an eardrum doing just that

Crazy.

Yes, due to the lower air pressure the boiling point of water is only going to reach something like 80 degrees Celsius. It'll still "boil" the egg, but it'll be alot slower. To those who say it can't, the protein in egg whites can get denatured at 80 degrees, it'll just take longer than at 100 degrees. (metric > imperical)

Why bother eating an egg up there? With all you have to worry about, the last thing anyone wants to deal with is smelly farts.
