M16\M4 is fine for modern war conditions - as long as your keep your rifle clean. However it won't be as good in WWIII, but lets all hope that it won't happen. From what I've watched\read M4 have some problems with overheat and accuracy due to shortened barrel.
The overheating problem is more due to the direct gas system than the shorter barrel. It is also a problem on the M16, but less so. THe direct gas system also fouls the chamber up with a quickness. The piston system is more reliable, keeps the weapon cooler, and keeps the chamber cleaner. The problem is that it costs more money than the direct gas system.
Also, the M4/M16 system is starting to get a bit heavy, once all those cool modern attachments are added on. Like a reflex sight, night vision monocle, cowitnessed scope, ir and visible light laser, tac light, grenade launcher, etc...
