I've had my 360 since x-mas and never had the time to hook it up, so this Monday I finally hooked it all up and played Halo 3 (which was good except the end, WTF happened)

well playing games I don't really hear it but when I'm watching DVDs, that thing sounds like a fucking jet taking off

There's not really a way to make it quiet, but I assume it's the DVD drive that makes the noise when playing DVD's? If so, you can get an external HD-DVD player which is really cheap now because the format is dying, but I assume you can play normal DVD's on those too.
If it's the fan, nothing you can do about it. It's a server fan because microsoft couldn't think of any other way to keep it cool inside the white box.

My mum bought an addon for her xbox, it plugs into the AV slot and has a fan inbuilt, supposed to quieten it down a lot.

see if you can google it.

It'll do the opposite. You're just adding more fans or whatever that thing has.

Guess the internal fans will go at a slower pace aka less sound ?

Is it possible to do any modding to xbox consoles? Can you take the components out of the original case and put them in a pc case and switch out fans/HDDs/dvd drives etc.?

Not recommended. You'll lose warranty and most things are incompatible, not to mention most things won't fit. People have tried swapping things with pc components etc. but most things failed. I know about HDD's, you can't use regular ones in an XBox (without being an extremely experienced modder that is), but XBox's use their own form of HDD.

xbox live does checks on XBOXES, when the BIOS voltage is to low it will ban you from XBOX live. that means if you remove the fan and replace it with a heatpipe you will get banned. I don't know why they do it but it sure sucks.

That'll quieten the fans down, then you just need to get a new CD drive for it. This will all void your warranty though, so unless you can get a shop to do it or something you won't be able to return it if it dies. Being significantly cooler it should have less chance of dying though.

EDIT: This will quieten down the CD drive a bit. Apparently replacing the CD will result in your Live account being banned, so this is the next best thing. Cheaper too.

I packaged mine up for t3h ring of death...last week..parents still haven't brought it to a ups store. One of the options was something about fan/disk drive noise. Hope they fix it up. I just put it cuz they asked which ive experienced. (freezes, etc.) i dont really freeze or get much noise since i stopped playing ES4 oblivion..lulz...but idk whats normal, etc but hell yes it sounds like a jet taking off sometimes

Just trade in your Xbox 360 for a PS3. There you go, problem solved

Lol, how unfortunate.

I guess those are a few more reasons why I won't be purchasing an xbox.
