The fight between these two songs has had metalheads banging their metal heads against each other since day one (day one being July 1982).

It is now time for these two songs to fight here, on bf2s.com. You don't have to like either to vote. But listen to them first.

Background:

"The Mechanix" is written by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, during the time he was a member of Metallica. After Mustaine was kicked out of the band and replaced with curly-haired Kirk Hammett, lyrics were re-written by James Hetfield and Hammett added a melodic guitar solo in the middle. The song was released as "The Four Horsemen" on Metallicas "Kill 'Em All" in 1983, and later as "The Mechanix" on Megadeths "Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!" in 1985.

The original Mechanix can be found on Metallicas demo "No Life 'Til Leather" from 1982, the way it was originally meant to be heard.

Side notes:

- Mustaines' "Mechanix'" lyrics are filled with automotive phrases and sexual innuendo, as "The Four Horsemen" has lyrics that are about the end of the world and the apocalypse (as the title suggests). Which one is more metal? Death and blackness, or chicks and cars? I'd say both are more metal

- Mustaine asked specifically that his material wouldn't be used on Metallicas album. Metallica didn't do so, but Mustaine remains credited on "Kill 'Em All"

- Before performing the song live, Mustaine still refers occasionally to "their way" and "our way".

Automotive repair by some sweaty dude named "Skeeter" is pure metal.  Gotta go with the Metallica version on this one Don, even if they did "borrow" Mustaine's riff...

Borrow? It's a bit more complex than that.

Although I generally like Metallica more (but of course), I'll have to go with The Mechanix myself, just because the sped of it alone gives the song a more "thrashy" feel. I like.

Mechanix overall. As I said in that other topic though, I find it hard to compare Metallica and Megadeth. Different sounds.

I prefer the Four Horsemen. Never really been much into Megadeth.

While the Megadeth version of the song does retain a more "thrashy" feel that was prominent with early 80's metal, the Metallica version contains a few extra riffs which are composed of pure victory itself.  The slower version of the main verse riff is much more dynamic and imposing, while the Mechanix "thrash" version is muddy and not nearly as distinguishable, even on the original recording.  I also prefer curly-haired Hammett's melodic soloing (in this particular song) to the Megadeth more-notes-is-better mentality, as I find the Mustaine version to be rather repetative and a bit on the boring side.  The only nod that I would give to Megadeth in this particular situation would be to their opening riff, which is ominous and a great addition to such a masterful work.

I believe that we should ask Mr. Mustaine and Mr. Ulrich to resolve the issue peacefully.

Metallica's version is definately better. Metal isn't necessarily better if it's played faster, quite the opposite for my mind, and Hetfield is a much better singer. But the Megadeath guitar solo was better (which I didn't expect).

Horsemen, I've always thought mechanix was sped up too much.
