Failure is going to happen, but im a visionary in the way i think and i wont garentee anything, but i'll tell you im much more likely to succeed than most of the kids who go to school around here.

Plus, college isn't going to make me rich. It might get me a nice job working for someone else, but i don't want to work for someone else my whole life.
Tell that to a doctor or lawyer who owns his own practice.  Or an engineer who does consulting work.  Examples can continue ad nauseum.

You have a skewed view of what college can and can't do for you.

Ok i didn't really say what i meant last post.
The college i would be able to afford would not make me a lawyer or a doctor. Im done arguing about it, we'll see in 20 years. Maybe ill fail, maybe ill succeed, maybe ill die? Who knows. But if i do die tomarrow ill be happy to know i spend the last 3 years not wiltering away in school. Of coarse i know thats not the way to live life, but im just sayin.

I'd agree with that.  People are citizens first, scientists later.
I'm probably going into a field that requires math and science. I'd rather be learning science instead of learning how to write an essay worthy of a 5 on the English AP.
No no no no no!!!

History does not = writing essays.  Neither does politics, or religion.

The question I have for you is:  How can learning anything be a bad thing?  Who cares if you'll never need it.  Intellectual growth is enough of a reward, at least, for me it is.  I took a history minor in undergrad.  Will I ever use that history knowledge in my chosen field?  Nope.  Why did I learn it?  Personal enrichment.

I like learning for the sake of learning, and maybe that isn't your idea of a good time, and that's fine, but don't say that learning things you won't need for work is a bad thing.  Learning is never bad.
I guess I'd agree with most of that.  I just think some of the priorities are screwed up.  This isn't a liberal or conservative thing, but some people honestly go through college and beyond and don't have a clue about stuff, I'm sure you know.

I just think high school could be better done.  Maybe its just my high school, or the ones in my area.

Every history class I have ever taken has been based almost solely on writing essays.

lol.

You're looking at it from the wrong way.

If you really like what you're writing about, it won't matter that you're writing an essay.  Get me?

No, I agree.  Public education could be improved greatly.  But ultimately, students need to want to learn in order to actually learn anything.

Have to go with what my History teacher told us: School isn't to teach you a damn thing (though it's a bonus). It's to prepare you for college.

I'm not gonna remember half of all the technicalities of the English language because frankly they'll never help in whatever fields I go into.

edit: Fuck, I don't remember half of them already, but I'm a decent enough writer... enough to get my point across.
I was referring to the following underlined:

Mitch wrote:

When the time rolls around when i need to know something, for a job, then i will learn it then. Study my ass off, and it'll be fresh in my mind and ready to use.
Or you could be forced to learn it all when you dont need it, forget it, graduate, and need to relearn it for your job again.

1 thing though before we continue debating, what is your point Senor? Are you arguing with me just for the sake of arguing?
Why learn stuff again if you can just learn it while you have time and put some effort into retaining it?

meh, they don't call it the left coast for nothing. My 2 girls are home schooled and they have friends all over town.

In general, I'd say the purpose is for parents to have more control over what how and/or what their children are taught.  Some people are fed up with the politically correct bs going on in our schools.  The only way to take back control is private schooling or home schooling.  Public school approaches education in a cookie cutter manner, yet children learn differently.  Most children learn just fine in that atmosphere, yet some, like my sister, do not.  She had terrible grades in regular school, but when she was home-schooled her grades skyrocketed because it could be tailored to her learning style.

Yeah. I mean I guess I can see in some instances. I do think it makes some people suffer in the social aspect of growing up, although if you are in a city/well populated town or have prior friends from other things, I'm sure it would work out.

This is true, but its your own responsibility to get yourself out there and meet people. I wasnt homeschooled untill 8th grade so i had already met tons of people.

I'd agree with that. Homeschooling is a terrible idea IMHO.
