Wild idea 4 me today:
I'm not big on details, but this is close enough...

Microsoft is getting sued by the EU for uncompetitive behavior.

This morning on the radio, I heard that OPEC has decided not to increase production.

Yeah, I know...but it's a thought.

^^ Exactly

Idea: How about we tell the EPA to get a life, drill everywhere we have oil, and tell OPEC to choke on their oil.

Don't forget it's cheaper to get it overseas.

Cheaper in the short run... Yes.

But why we are not drilling off of the shores of Florida and California just baffles me. We need to build more refineries and upgrade the existing ones at least.

Both California and Florida have laws against oil rigs.  I know Florida's has to do with ruining the tourists' vistas of the water.

I would also think that the amount of cash we are shelling out to "defend our interests" probably isn't part of the equation...

Anyhow, why isn't the EU sueing OPEC?

Oh yeah...the reason why it's cheaper is because the product you get from the Middle East has less refinery-type costs.  The US' version of oil is better for high grade gases like jet fuel.

OPEC is a conglomeration of countries, not a corporation.

I know that, just drawing a similarity in the situation - it's okay for countries to play unfair but not for corporations.  It was a total hypothetical.

Corporations need to play by the rules to operate inside a country, whereas countries stand on their own.  That is a fundamental difference.

OPEC controls ~40% of the world's oil production.

Microsoft's market share is as high as 90%.

That's also a large difference.  I don't see much of a parallel between the two.

We're friends with Australia, let's get a leg-up on the competition and set up Uranium mining operations there

That would be very silly and short sighted. The US policy of keeping the bulk of their oil reserves untapped is extremely cunning.

Half the time, the EU sues foreign companies for anticompetitive practices while still allowing European companies to use them and while they receive tax money from their governments.

That's why I said, "half of the time."

Look at what's currently going on between Intel and AMD.  Intel may be very powerful, but it's not exactly a valid case to sue them over anticompetitive practices when the German government subsidizes AMD.

It would be like Airbus suing Boeing for being anticompetitive while they receive government money.

I just did...  here is the Intel story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19991903/

This is rather odd since AMD is currently subsidized by the German government.  So, it's ok for a government to prop up a corporation, but another corporation can't prop up its own share of business with its own money.  I would consider AMD's subsidization no less anticompetitive than Intel's practices.  It seems like more than a coincidence that AMD is German and Intel is American.  If the shoe was on the other foot, I'd bet the EU wouldn't side with Intel.

AMD is an American company, is it not?  They have a fabrication plant in Dresden, though.
