Ok. Because of latest disappointments with 9800 series, I keep my 8800GTX. And I really don't want nforce board to get the SLi. Or pay 250€ + 8800GTX to get the 9800GX2.

On the other hand I have been doing some business with other hardware and I now have some money to spend on pc hardware. 160€ actually.

Question 1: Should I buy a new, fast and big HDD now and use it for my next build in couple years too OR wait till the next build and buy HDD then?
I really won't need more HDD space in future if I get the new HDD now. There seems not to be any big performance differences with the new drives coming out in few years. So a fast current gen HDD would be enough for my future rig too?

Question 2: IF I get the HDD now, which one?

1. Samsung Spinpoint T166 HD501LJ 500GB 92.40€

2. Western Digital Caviar SE WD5000AAKS 500GB 88.40€

I have couple Seagate drives and WD drives and I like them but I have never had a Samsung. Are they really as silent and fast as they say?

My Plextor PX712-A DVD-RW drive is dying (can't burn full DVD) and my USB memory stick died too. So I migh replace those too and buy some thermal grease and arctic clean kit as well.

Opinions please.

Wait with the buying of a new HDD when you buy a new system and if you DO want a new HDD, get a spinpiont.

Why is Raptor not an option? It costs exactly 160€...

Buy HDDs as you need them, not when you have left over money
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

My Raptor is very silent, i know cause i had WD Caviar before and i don't notice any difference. Raptor X on the other hand is very loud.

I might have use for the 500GB one. But I really don't want to spend 90€ for a HDD now if I have to buy new one when I do the major upgrade in the future.

You won't need to spend 90€, you will need to spend 160€!

In real terms it doesnt provide that much of a speed boost of a comparible sized, say, segate baracuda.  It is quicker, but, not so much to warrant a hefty premium.  Imo atleast

My vote:

Western Digital Caviar SE WD5000AAKS 500GB 88.40€

Get the Samsung one. Don't get a Raptor. They are a horrendous waste of money. Especially if you actually want to put things on your computer and not just leave it almost empty all the time. A 150GB Raptor with 130GB on is considerably slower than a modern 500GB drive with 130GB on, due to the differing data densities and stroking.

Raptors are simply too small to be practical. If you want small speedy drives, do what my friend does - grab 4 RAM drives to whack in CD bays, with 4GB in each giving you a 16GB RAMdisk running at 600MB/s (saturated SATA2 in RAID0). That goes blindingly fast (and was surprisingly cheap), Raptors are not worth bothering with.

Also voting for the Samsung one I have had a Spinpoint T under heavy use for 2 years ago (constantly running data) and it has never failed on me. Getting a little bit sloppy now but still a really good drive. I plan on getting Samsung drives solely for all future builds unless something turns!

How would the Samsung Spinpoint T166 HD501LJ 500GB do in my next build? I would be building it in couple years. I don't want to buy two new HDDs. Isn't the SATA-III only new thing that is coming atm? If it is like SATA-I and II there isn't big difference in performance, only file transfer speed.

The interface a drive uses does not affect its speed. SATA drives run at the same speed as SATA2 drives, there is just more available bandwidth, which the drives don't use.

thx guys.
I'll get these. I'm sure that Samsung will be just fine for my future build too.

Samsung Spinpoint T166 HD501LJ 500GB
Lite-On LH-20A1S-15C DVD-RW
4GB USB 2.0 Memory Agenie/My Flash
ZM-STG1 Thermal Grease
ArcticClean Kit 60ml
5x DVD-R 16X

=156.5€ + shipping

Still cheaper than the Raptor even tho I get more useful stuff.
