Did you all miss the fact the kid is a 'foster teen', which means he's under guidance of the courts? At 18, he will be able to enlist, so what's the point.

Judges who decide these cases are supposed to make a decision in the best interest of the child, so maybe she was thinking a 17 yo kid was lured into the army because of a cheque of 10.000 USD and some bullshitting peptalk from a pr guy.

Can a 17 yo enlist without the consent of his parents?

You dont have rights until your 18. So yeah, technically, it seems this judge has the power to do this, doesnt make it right though, a decision based on personal opinions. That is the exact opposite of what a judge is supposed to do.

Why can't a social worker or foster parent have that control?  In this kid's case, they both consent to his decision.

Cause the state has control over the kid, so the judge can decide where he can go. Foster parents just provide housing, food, etc.

The judge in this trial clearly has the right to tell the kid what he can and cannot do. Whether or not the judge made the right decision is a matter of personal opinion. If I were judge, I allow the kid to enlist, as I know that foster kids have a tough childhood, and the military provides a purpose for them... which they may need.
I am adamantly opposed to the Iraq war... I think it's a shit war that we're fighting for shit reasons which were shittily crafted by shit leaders. I think support for the Iraq war is a disgusting example of how many people in this country are still ignorant to our government's abuse of power.
But... People are people, and they think different things... and if this kid wants to join, then by all means, let him. Soldiers are important people and if this kid wants the sense of purpose that accompanies being a marine, then he deserves that shot...

But it's all mostly unimportant because he can enlist next year anyway.

You have rights, you just can't enter into contracts until you are 18.

Not really, our parents still have legal control over us, so they can do what ever they want as long as it isnt illegal...

Well, they ARE your parents.  You still have rights.  The problem is that your rights in the Constitution are there to prevent the GOVERNMENT from taking away those rights.  It says nothing about what your parents can do.

You don't like it?  Apply for immancipation.

A legal gaurdian. Who ever is trusted to watch over you. In my case, my parents, in that kids case, the state, or more exactly, the court.

You could go to college, get in as a 2nd Lt. or join up after highschool and use the money from the GI Bill for college, little over 39k now. Thats the route Im taking probably.
