"Why We Fight

WHY WE FIGHT, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, it is an unflinching look at the anatomy of the American war ... all ยป machine, weaving unforgettable personal stories with commentary by a whos who of military and beltway insiders. Featuring John McCain, William Kristol, Chalmers Johnson, Gore Vidal, Richard Perle and others, WHY WE FIGHT launches a bipartisan inquiry into the workings of the military industrial complex and the rise of the American Empire. Inspired by Dwight Eisenhowers legendary farewell speech (in which he coined the phrase military industrial complex), filmmaker Jarecki (THE TRIALS OF HENRY KISSINGER) surveys the scorched landscape of a half-centurys military adventures, asking how and telling why a nation of, by, and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a system whose survival depends on a state of constant war. The film moves beyond the headlines of various American military operations to the deeper questions of why why does America fight? What are the forces political, economic, ideological that drive us to fight against an ever-changing enemy? Frank Capra made a series of films during World War II called WHY WE FIGHT that explored Americas reasons for entering the war, Jarecki notes. Today, with our troops engaged in Iraq and elsewhere for reasons far less clear, I think its crucial to ask the questions: Why are we doing what we are doing? What is it doing to others? And what is it doing to us?"

Yep, but like many propaganda busters out there, this came and went with little fanfare.  William "the bloody" Kristol...that dude needs some serious broken face.

Did you even watch the documentary?  Its one of the most unbiased and bipartison things I've ever seen.

BTW I own BoB on DVD too.

The documentary is not anti-military... in a way its not really anti-war either.  Its just pointing out that those profitting off war are "borderline corrupt" (John McCain) and that they are fucking up our military and our politics.  (on and untold scale.)

PS its pretty scary how no one seems to talk about this.  Its basically how the Roman empire fell, and if we don't fix it, its how we'll fall too.

Why We Fight is one of my alltime favorite movies.  As Spearhead said, it really is one of the most unbiased war documentaries out there.  There's another good one that came out recently about the Iraq War, but I can't remember its name.

I'm getting it this April. They even have a sequel coming out, called "The Pacific". You can take a guess what it's about.

So raping a woman is better than killing her?

Yeah, I'd rather fight for oil than kill off 200,000 muslims tbh

although I know for lowing it'd probably be a tough choice :S

That was pretty good, the part near the end with the ex-cop talking was pretty sad!

Thanks +1!

Thank you very much for posting that, I likely would never have known about it otherwise.

Gotta say, I always respected Eisenhower since he wrote that letter prior to D-Day bestowing praise on those fighting if the invasion worked and taking all blame if it failed.  Seeing this though gives me a whole new level of respect for the man.  Wish someone like him would come along again.

He was one of the greatest military leaders the USA has ever had.  Maybe the best.  And he coined the term "military industrial complex".  If that doesn't show validity of the argument, I dont know what does.

Amazing number of mistakes in the captions of the dialogue.  The most ironic being in the new American creed referenced by Bush as "let's roll" and captioned as "let's rule".

Also, maybe they should ask why muslims are killing muslims.  We didn't kill millions.  stop being such an idiot.

That's a result of bad conversion from graphics to text.  See all DVD subtitles are actually images and not plain text.  You need to use an OCR application to convert the subtitles files to time-coded text files.  Problem is that most programs to do this are no where near 100% accurate.
