I'm sorry to say and hope you don't get insulted but the sound of your plans doesn't seem all that dedicated to get a well functioning home theater ... it sounds a little half hearted tbh ... correct me if i'm wrong
Its not that it is half hearted, it is just that we have all the crap lying around bar the screen.

We have 2 fronts, a center, and two back speakers. All are separate units (where did built in come from?).

It is just the screen/TV we are unsure about. Hence the thread. It is more of a rumpus room that is focussed on a massive TV more than anything.

I'm thinking projector is the way to go.

You mentioned using the build in speakers from a TV ???

Well, good to clear that up then so i can continue

About the brick wall: You can get some mats, thick noice reducing black mats to cover the bricks, not sure where you can buy them at your place but a audio store can prolly direct you

I would definately go projector with the size of that room, just make sure the one you go for have the necesary connections you need for PS3 or whatever consoles you have ... also check how long the bulb will last and what a new bulb costs when you need to replace it ...

Ahh sorry. I was referring to the current plasma in the other room - which is the "everyday" TV.

I don't think we will go to that extent, is something I hadn't thought of though! Thanks for the idea.

I don't have any new consoles yet, just in case. But yeh, the right connections will def be checked.

New question:

If you have a PC hooked up to this, would a res such as 1280x720 look alright? I think it would, but I know little

i think projectors have their own resolution, so you might want to check that.

When I get a new TV I'm getting a DLP.  The fact is that DLP televisions don't have a footprint significantly larger than current plasma or LCD.  They are actually the least power consuming of the 3 technologies.  They have all the benefits of a CRT television as far as color gamut and contrast ratio are concerned.  They do better in rooms with more light.  And with the new LED backlit versions you don't have to replace the bulb (it lasts the life of the TV) and it resolves the rainbow effect that could sometimes occur with bulb lit DLP sets.

The biggest downside I see to actual DLP projectors is this.  To really avoid interference you need to ceiling mount them.  That also means some pretty lengthy, and costly cables.  You can't really project on a wall because you'll never have a truly flat surface.  Lastly, once the projector and screen are mounted, your ability to move them to another location in the room is significantly limited.

Yeah it will look fine, me and some friends used to play (race)games using a projector hooked up to a PC.

Ok, ta guys. I guess I could have worked that out from school/uni anyway as the lecturers do it everyday :S

The specific res was just the resolution output of one of the projectors I saw the other day.

Parker: That is correct

Keep in mind projectors are really influenced by lighting conditions. You said it's in a garage so you will probably be ok. A couple weeks ago I spent a weekend helping my friend install black out on his windows upstairs . He built his screen, it's not that tough to do. The novelty of having a movie theater type screen kinda wears off pretty quick. However it's still fun to play Wii on the big screen . I have another buddy who spent over $50k turning his bonus room into a home theater, complete with stage and automated curtains. He barely uses it.. the shame.

If I were to go the route of projector I would need to go all out $$. Anything in between is a panel for me. Of course it depends on your own personal preference and use.

With a 3k AUD budget, I would reccomend going for Plasma or LCD.

Also, 70% of the home theatre experience is good surround sound (imo). What speakers do you have atm?

The sound is decent, we have been using it in another room.

I think we have 2 big ones at the front, a center one, 2 Jamo? at the rear. And we are buying a sub.

So it seems that for under 5/6k that projectors are sub-par?

You'll want to do this. You might get some nasty bounces back, and it will sound muddy. Then again, you aren't going to be mixing professional CDs in there...

But it will also help to deaden the noise to outside the room (aka late night gaming with loud volume levels )

Yeh I talked about it with Dad last night. He said that he and the builder had discussed it - and that we weren't going to put it in at first, but will put it in later if it is needed.

And after the home theatre, they are doing the en suite and maybe the kitchen, so it wont be hard ot get them just to whack in some soundproofing.

About the projector: Check out the Epson TW2000.

It's supposedly pretty good, and not that pricey!
