Personally I think it's a little distasteful. Bordering on disgusting.
quoting what's already been quoted in the thread.
They're paying them back, better late than never.
inane little opines
I for one, would be annoyed if my tax money would be going to Jews for some shit that happened ages ago. Especially considering that they're all well of anyways. And that Israel isn't exactly a poor African nation where kids are starving daily.
It's all bollocks, they should've done it in the 50's and shit. There are millions of people in Belgium who have no connection to this whatsoever.
People here always bitch about how they shouldn't be taking the blame for slavery/empire building, yet when this happens it's all "agreed" I mean give me a damn break.

Maybe it's because I don't pay taxes... yet... but I'd wager that if the tax money didn't go to the survivors, it would be spent on something silly.Mek-Izzle wrote:

And if this is JUST for the survivors I don't see a huge issue. Just like I wouldn't have had an issue with the US granting land to freed slaves after the civil war. But the descendants? I'm sorry, but just because you descended from people who suffered at injustice doesn't mean you are entitled to government benefits.
Which is pure BS. The authorities and people responsible should have apologised to and paid the actual victims (and served proper sentences). Any such apology made now to the victims' descendents is empty, meaningless and distasteful. And so is claiming financial compensation for someone else's misery and suffering.dayarath wrote:

Sorry, but most of the people here are fucking idiots for not even understanding the article/payments. It isn't a "sorry we treated you bad, here is some money" type of deal.
READ THE QUOTED ARTICLE YOU FUCKING TOOLS.Campaigners welcomed the decision to compensate those whose property and goods in Belgium had been looted by Nazi occupiers.
Overall, $54 million will be paid to individual claimants with the rest going to a Jewish trust that will help the poor and keep the memory of the horrors of the Holocaust alive.
Of the total restitution payout, $69.8 million will come from the Belgian authorities, and $85 million from banks. Most of the remainder came from insurance companies.
