Actually I know this.

Stems from the military - remove your cap, which was a popular spot for people to hide weapons and kill the commander.  It's the same reason why you are supposed to salute - to prove you aren't armed.

I wanna see you in the Sombrero, come on, pony up.
Also, all my 50+ teachers dislike hats, all the rest are fine.

then you get to buy everyone in the bar a drink, or you can gtfo
huh
the officers club is a bar on a naval base where only officers go to drink, if someone walks in wearing a hat (cause like you said, disrespectful), that person buys drinks around the house, i guess merchant marines do it to, but ive only been to one bar that did that and it was in Gitmo, if someone told me i had to buy drinks round the house i would tell them to fuck off
I'm probably not joinin the navy so I'm safe

And to the others, if that's the origin.. then LMAO. Yeah, I'm obviously packing a .45 under my cap.

Ive heard that.

Ive also heard a different origin for the salute.  It stems from the days of body armor and face visors.  two knights meeting on a road would lift their visors to show their face, putting their hands in the same position as the modern salute.

Yup, as someone hinted at before it comes from head protection...

Specifically, medieval helmets. To have your helmet on meant you were prepared for combat. To go inside a place, you were to be treated as a guest. If you wore your helmet inside, then you were telling your host that you did not trust them, and were staying in a "combat ready" state of mind.

There are a lot of traditions that we carry from that time period. Saluting is another example. It also came from the same time period, and mimics the arm movement it took to raise your visor.

Frankly, I agree that there is no reason to keep certain "traditions" alive when they are not needed.

"here you go bubbles" (sticks $20 bill up bubbles ass)

For one thing: that's been around for at least one or two centuries (taking your hat off for women, etc - common courtesy) - it's because it hides your face/obstructs the view thereof. It's just etiquette. :p

Depends on what kind of hat you wear. If it's a degenerate flat-brimmed baseball cap you deserve to be hung, drawn and quartered. I'm sure that was probably a decree made by the king too. If not it fucking should be.

They let kids in school chew gum, eat food during class, and play with their cell phones without being caught, yet we can't wear a hat.

Why is it disrespectful to flip some one off?

Perhaps even more arbitrary that wearing a hat when you consider the significance of eye to eye contact (look me in the face!)

Typically it goes way back. Flipping people off is allegedly a sign given by french archers in midevil times. When they were caught there bow finger was cut off, so showing there bow finger to the enemy to show they could still shoot was a "fuck you"

Random little things turn into cultural habit. People are raised with it and accept it as normal.

Welcome to society.

Flipping off is widely regarded in the US as "Fuck you." I personally do it to my friends all the time, but I certainly wouldn't flip off my teacher in class for instance.

Wearing a hat inside, however, is generally regarded as disrespectful by people who were born at least 100 years ago and whining crybabies. Everyone else who lives in the now doesn't give two shits.

Wearing a hat inside is fine though.

So the fact that society regards something as disrespectful makes it disrespectful?

Yes. But do you honestly, HONESTLY think that wearing a hat is as bad as flipping someone off? Do ya?

I just don't understand it. I can sort of understand not swearing in public, I can understand not having sex in public. But wearing a hat inside? Who the hell made up that bullshit "rule"?

It seems like one of those decrees a King made one day, and it never died off. I asked my friend why people ask you to take off your hat and he's like "It's disrespectful." I wanted to flip out and say "WHY THE FUCK SO" but I kept my cool.

I don't even care about wearing a hat. If I had cash to burn I'd just get my hair cut every month or so (my hair grows obscenely fast). I wear a hat for convenience mostly... just pop it on, don't worry about how your hair looks. Now I think I'll wear it in defiance, just to spite people who think it's disrespectful when it's not.
It isn't a no-no if you are am girl, Enjoy your indoor hat...  Also, do you know where the sagging pants phenom came from?
