i'm proud to have read it first and not just have been swept up in the Hollywood glitz and glabour of it (though in fairness the series is incredibly good)
IT was a great book which I read regularly and I have nothing but the utmost respect for all of those men. The book was touching, emotional, exciting... at the end of the book you get the Company of Heroes line. In the book you see how it all happened. In the book, you have MAjor Richard D. Winters. In the book....you get my drift.

The book has a wealth of other engagements or details that had to be omitted from the series. If you can get it and loved the series I seriously suggest you read this.

Did you follow the trend or pick this book up in the store?

This is why I made the post, was talking with some friends about the series and they admitted they hadnt read the book and wouldnt so as not to taint the awesomeness of the series or some BS like that.

same here, his d-day book is worth a look even if you dont like reading much just because it makes you go 'wha..harshness, i never knew that' a lot.

Read many of Ambrose's books, including BoB. In fact, I'm reading a book right now that he contributed to called "What If?"

Pretty fucking cool read.

I read that book by Mr. Ambrose for my Political Science class. A quality book by any standard. Haven't touched any other such titles related to him or political science except for Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies .

Seen some of the commercials for the series, but never watched them. I did enjoy "Saving Private Ryan" and "Tora, Tora, Tora" for WW2 movies.

Then watch the series, because they're better. In general I've the series rather high on my list of "best all time WWII movies/series". It comes after "A Bridge to Far" I guess, but at least equals anything else. The Bastogne episode > all.

Diamond is a little too simplistic, but interesting. If you liked that book try "Carnage & Culture" by Victor Davis Hansen - discusses how the underdog won battles because of their cultural differences. Examples: Battle of Midway - US pilots willing to fly beyond the point of no return to find the Japanese fleet, Why Vietnam Failed - Democracy and self-criticism, Alexander at Guagelama (sp) - 10,000 beat 300,000 because the Greeks were a volunteer army and not slaves like the Persians.

I have! I read the book before I watched the series and after that I was hooked on his books. I recommend Band of Brothers, Citizen Soldiers, and D-Day to anyone, they are all fantastic books.

Not a big Stephen Ambrose fan. Dull and a little too overdramatic. Great TV series though.
