link to thread that discusses the quote below

I'll get straight to the point. I've finally isolated the problem with the CAT 6.2 drivers. It's with one file, the D3D driver aka ati3duag.dl_ in an install package, and named ati3duag.dll once it's properly installed in your /windows/system32/ directory.

Catalyst 5.13 reported normal test scores in 3dMark and cpu limited games, and CAT 6.2 showed a marked decrease. Understanding this, I decided to set out and find the exact file causing the issue. First I ran both sets of drivers without CCC installed and had the same results: the cat 6.2's were eating up 20-30% extra processing compared to the 5.13 drivers. Understanding it was not a CCC issues, nor a CAT AI issue etc, I decided to see if there was something else causing the problem. So I ran 69 tests in a row...Crossfire-based motherboards (maybe only Asus A8R-MVP oqwners, since I've yet to see data from any DFI owners) are affected.

suggest you uninstall then use driver cleaner in Safe Mode

So far this is only found with the X1900 series but it could very well effect other cords and the new patch could aggravate the problem even worst

It appears that with the Cat 6.2 you have a rogue D3D file causing problems with certain MBs. In general Crossfire so far.  In particular cross fire motherboards.  So far this has been discovered.  This does not mean it's only limited to DFI MB's using crossfire with x1900 VCs.  So I post it her for the Admin and mods to read.  It's a moderately long thread and it gets interesting towards the end of the thread dated 2-16-06.

Please be mindful that you attempt this at your own risk.  There is no guarantee this will increase proformance.

a problem was found in some x1900 cards and with certain motherboards.  A bad d3d file appears to be the problem in the way it executes with the cpu.  the 6.1 d3d is the older version thats more compatible with single core cpus.  the 6.2 d3d appears to be more compatible with dual core cpus.  I am not 100% sure about this however, this is my understand of the problem so far.  This is not a guarantee fix for your problem.  Just a suggestion.
