What would be the best choice? I've been thinking for awhile about getting a brand new PC instead of trying to upgrade my hopeless AMD-based rig.

Here's what I would be buying
Price: $1250 at least

So I've been waiting for awhile for the Yorkfields to release, but how much performance gain will a Q9450 give me over a Q6600 or an E8400, or will it give any at all?
Model Process Cache FSB Stock clock Multi-core Price
Q6600 65nm 8mb 1066mhz 2.4 ghz quad $250
E8400 45nm 6mb 1333mhz 3.0 ghz dual $260
Q9450 45nm 12mb 1333mhz 2.67 ghz quad > $316

edit: I'm open to suggestions about my other components as well.

Q9s were supposed to release Jan 20, then got pushed to today, March 15, but I can't find them anywhere.

With all this delay, there's going to be such a high demand.  I think it's going to be difficult to find them for a little while.

Id possibly wait for the new quad-core one. Then OC it to 3Ghz.

I think I might get a decent quad-core too.... Some things can get a big laggy with this dual-core E6600. I liek play0ng gam3z an copyfing over stuffffffffff @ smae tiem.
But only get the quad-core if you have Vista or intend on using applications/etc that use the other cores. You could get the Dual core if you are only gaming with it, if you dont want to wait for price/avaliability.

Basicly it comes down to this. If your gonna do alot of moviework and music editing, get a quad. if it is 90% gaming you want, a Duo is better.

E8400 costs the same as a E8500 here.

It is better use identical sticks of ram. 4GB for Vista definately. E8400 is more than enough for gaming but if you do a lot CPU demanding stuff then the Q9450. Q6600 not worth it anymore tbh.

edit: awsome motherboard too. I have it and I love it.

cut down a bit on the PSU,  700W is overkill IMO.
Get 4gigs of ram.

I'll be using XP, if I ever get Vista I'll buy extra RAM as it's so cheap.

I do mostly gaming but I also do a lot of Photoshop and some video editing here and there.
