My game crashed earlier (actually the whole computer did), and when I restarted the game my controls and settings were all gone. It's not even that they were back to default, they were literally gone. Control.con was blank. That ever happen to anyone before? I've had the game crash the same way before (screen freezes, sound goes into a loop, then the picture goes weird and I have to hit the reset button) but I never had my control go byebye before.

- Interesting problem: my controls deleted themself.
I had that happen to me the first week I had BF2 (I got BF2 the day it came out). Only problem was I didn't know that was the problem. So I just made a new account (which is the one I'm using now). I found out a year later that my controls were deleted.
Can't you just reset them to defaults, and all will be well?
That exact same thing happened to me once when I was playing BF1942. I set the controlls back to default, but ever since then I cannot play BF1942 on my windows account. I have to log on as my sister for it to work. Otherwise, the game assigns me the name " 741#%&*" and it erases the control setting again. I've even tried uninstalling it.
Happened to me before, really sucked because I don't use default controls, and I had to set up my joystick again.
Same thing happened here, but not only were the controls gone, the entire account was gone. I had to retrieve it using the email thing. I ended up with about 3 blank off line accounts for no reason.. I think you should just back up your controls to some other place. And/or the account if you want to keep it without problems. I've had to reset my controls many times because of this. It's just that the last few have been weird in that the entire account was wiped off my computer.
controls are stored in the controls.con file. looks like that file was damaged and battlefield had to reset the controls, just make a backup of that file.
it could be worse, like the system file being damaged upon that crash, you'd have to reinstall windows then

It's happened to me at least twice. Luckily i use defaults.
They were probably being written to for whatever reason when the game crashed, making the file unreadable.
After I built my new computer, the first time it ever crashed was in the same manner, black screen, looping sound with no controls after the reset. Was definitely interesting to say the least.
Happened to me. Had to reinstall the game I believe.cablecopulate wrote:

Happened to me too.Just click set to default?
Happens every other month.
The control files are still there, just blank, delete them and BF2 will create new ones with default settings.

I just copied my control.con file from another name. Although now the commander tells me everything all over again. "Press left click to drop an ammo bag!" The general.con must have gotten tweaked too, because the last modified date for that is 3/16/08.
And you say I don't know how to spell/write properly..cablecopulate wrote:

Yup, happened to me umpteen times, after the first time I made copies of the whole profile folder, not just the conrols, as I use my own tweeked controls/settings.
uh, what's wrong there?PrivateVendetta wrote:

Should be 'Themselves'
Well if you changed the wording of the sentence, "my control file deleted itself" would be correct while "my control file deleted itselves" is wrong. Controls are plural but there is only one control file, therefore, themself. That's how I see it.
Singular = itselfcablecopulate wrote:

Plural = themselves.
From what you said, it should have been "My controls deleted themselves" or "My control file deleted itself"
Themself doesn't feature... Firefox spell checker even underlines it as wrong
De-railed methinks...
