Okay, WHAT THE FUCK.

https://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d170/RS-Godfather/DMCA.jpg?t=1205804813

Your telling me that Cox has gone into my computer and looked at my files, found a movie and then disconnected my internet connection!? And THEN THREATENED TO TERMINATE SERVICE WITH ME IF THEY FOUND IT AGAIN!?

I know whats coming, "PWNED!"  "get off of limewire" "DMCA owned you" and all that good shit, I dont want this to be one of those threads

I put this thread in Everything else because, yes, it is lol worthy... but I want a serious discussion here - Im still not sure if its worth D&ST though (mods move it if you think so)

I feel my privacy has been invaded, I got this movie a while ago, its not like they intercepted packets and then dumped my connection, THEY HAD TO HAVE LOOKED IN MY FILES AND THEN DONE THAT

People making money off of selling copied dvd's, thats wrong, but since when can an ISP go into someones personal files?! Its not like im selling this movie or distributing it!

How would you feel if this happened to you? Or how do you feel if your a Cox customer knowing that Cox is looking in your files??
Discuss.

I got one of those too, for downloading MS Office 2003...and I didn't even download it. I mean, I downloaded the INSTALLER, but not the actual programs. I decided not to at the last minute. I got a letter, and apparentely if you don't respond, there's nothing they can do.

Btw, Warez-BB ftw.

They saw your IP downloading a copy of their movie, they contacted the ISP of that IP, and they took the actions according to company policy.

Sucks ass but that's the way it works. I don't think they looked in your files, they just saw your IP downloading that file.

Next tim euse BitTorrent and PeerGuardian. Also, send a letter full of flour or confectioner's sugar to Cox's HQ. They'll think it's anthrax.

edit: They don't actually know if you've deleted it. By "clickin here" you're agreeing that you've gotten rid of the infringing content.

Frankly dude be glad. They've given 12 year olds (well, the RIAA has) million dollar lawsuits for downloading a few albums. That's fucking lame and the RIAA should be firebombed for it.

It's your own fault, tbh. They have a right to disconnect your internet if you're doing illegal activities with their service. Plus, if they refuse to disconnect you, the RIAA can sue Cox. And since Cox doesn't want to get sued, they'll do what the RIAA wants.

However, Verizon is a great company. Apparently the RIAA is having trouble with them since they'll tell Verizon to disconnect users who are downloading stuff, but Verizon tells the RIAA to screw themselves.

RIAA are a buch of hypocritical fuckwits.  They own NO RIGHTS to any media/music etc., yet they think its their job to police the internet by suing people who download this. In turn, they become no worse than the Warez sellers on the streets; making money off of shareware.

We were very close to passing a bill which would have made such activities as the tivo, file-sharing of music and video, and copying files to CDs to and from MP3 players illegal

I sense a topic closure and some awm's. I got warned by a mod for promoting the aforementioned programs.

Almost forgot...Canada FTW!

I agree, the RIAA are complete Nazis.

However, this must be a sign that music prices are too high. Personally I don't think they are, and I buy 95% of my music. But when prices are too high, there becomes a black market. In this case, the prices on the black market are $0.
So when you have bands like NIN or Radiohead selling albums for as low as $5 or even allowing you to pay what you want, they're massively successful.

I hate the RIAA, MPAA as well but come on dude. You broke the law, and you were unlucky enough to be caught. As I said, you're very lucky they only suspended your service.

haha, gl.  a long, long time ago, i got a letter from my ISP (Cablevision) for downloading AoE III off a torrent.  They had all the details, the torrent tracker URL, the exact file name, when I downloaded it....etc.  All for a game that blew anyway.
