My girlfriend and I are thinking of places to go on holiday and I suggested going to Northern Norway for the Northern Lights because we both want to see them before we pop our clogs and she's a keen photographer and would relish the photo opportunities.

So we were thinking of heading to Tromso in late November, probably flying Dublin>Stansted>Tromso and staying in either the Thon Hotel Polar, ABC Hotel Nord or the Homeslepp in Nansenvegen. I know that's the dark season, I have kind of always wanted to see what that was like and it increases the chances of seeing the Northern lights.

Basically I was wondering if any of our Norwegian brethren here have seen the Northern lights or maybe been to Tromso and can offer any advice... Is Tromso going to be as crazily expensive as Oslo for example? Any advice on photographic techniques for the lights themselves? Any good websites for predicting occurences of the Northern Lights?

All advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Advice: Take pics, post here.

Anyways, always best to buy film that is made specifically for the light conditions if possible, and expose as long as necessary for a good result.

Not norwegian, but i know some things...

Tromso isn't as expensive as Oslo, no. However, we "Oslonians" tend to think of it as deserted with a bunch of Lapps

About the light, ask Hallvard onthis forum, he lives there.

As Jens said, Tromsø is not as expensive as Oslo. Don't get me wrong though, it's still expensive but if you're coming to Norway you have to be prepared for that which I see you are. As for Tromsø as a place I'd definitely recommend it. I went there during the summer and stayed in one of those hotels but I can't remember which one. I do remember that the thing I hated about the place was that it NEVER went dark...fuck. I would definitely take the trip though. Tromsø is a nice little city and tbh if you get the chance you should rent a car and drive around the area. The coastline is bloody amazing, the water is cold but it's really blue and looks like paradise.

O, bring warm clothes..it gets pretty damn cold up there during the winter.
