in 1936 a ruthless dictator was given the right to host the olympics, and now it has happened again the regime in Beijing has been chosen to host the 2008 olympics IT NEED TO BE STOPPED.
we cannot allow the games to be hosted in a country that has a regime as evil and corrupted as the chines government.
Proof of corrupt government please Herr_smitty how do I make a judgement without all the facts.

Search the net about forced abortions and sterilizations in China.  Or how about the persecution, arrest, torture, and killing of Chinese Christians who dare tell others about their faith.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3993857.stm   Human rights groups have documented an increasing number of arrests of Chinese Christians since the beginning of 2004.  Only for expressing their faith or printing literature about it.  Chinese police torture or kill people with impunity, even if they are trying to do nothing more than worship God.  Evil enough for you?

Stingray, it appears that you and I finally agree on something.  China is screwed up.

Hell, I'd rather live in America than in China, even if Pat Robertson was president.... (although I'd probably flee to Canada instead)

Perhaps, Tiananmen Square comes to mind?  If the way the Chinese government handled that wasn't evil, then I don't know what else to say.

Oh we don't hate the people, just their government. After all, at least the KMT reserved a lot of culture

Well, let's see...  My personal definition is doing something that does more harm to society than good.

Good is defined as aiding people in matters of poverty, equality, and personal fulfillment.

The atrocities at Tiananmen Square led to the deaths of thousands.  The only "good" that came of it was increasing the Chinese government's grasp on their people.

I'm pretty sure if the American government had done something like that over a mere political protest, you'd be condemning it as evil.

80 killed in Tibet! Did that make you change your mind on the subject?

Everybody knows how the situation is in China, so no sane human will change his opinion to be more positive just because of a sports event. So my opinion is that OL in Beijing create a lot of awareness about democracy in China, so it will only become better from this point.

If you want democracy, start by defending the freedom of speech, not the freedom of sports!

The sporting world has always been hypocritical, China being given the Olympics is only the latest example of this.

Look at how FIFA banned South Africa from competition during apartheid and yet FIFA and UEFA not only fail to do the same with Israel for operating a similar form of society but they go ahead and give Israel special permission to participate in the European zone. The governing bodies are good at banning little countries that can't do serious economic damage to other big nations. Don't expect to see the US, China, UK or any of their buddies banned from anything anytime soon.

Seriously, go read some history or something since your just full of shit. You do realize that the Chinese Government killed more of their own people than anyone else? If I was an athlete, I wouldn't compete in China since the air is so fucking dirty, let alone Beijing.

I strongly agree in your broader angle.
