Army recruitment officials are calling for a review of the rules on foreigners serving in the British forces after a surge of interest from Poles.Foreigners are currently barred from joining up unless they first live here for five years and become British citizens, while those from Commonwealth countries can sign up at any time. But with the Army struggling against a serious manpower shortage, senior officers revealed yesterday that the level of interest from Polish immigrant workers has prompted them to consider changes in the regulations.

The news emerged as the Army launched its latest £2million recruitment campaign. It unveiled research showing nine out of ten members of the public support Britain's soldiers - although only four out of ten back the current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.Lieutenant Colonel Paul Meldon, head of Army recruitment in London, said a significant number of Poles had made inquiries and voiced interest in joining up. He added: "Currently, they can't join up unless they live here for a few years and get a British passport - and it would need legislation to change that.

The Army needs to recruit around 15,000 soldiers a year just to maintain numbers, and for every ten people who visit recruitment offices or express interest, only one goes on to complete training and join an Army unit - meaning recruiters must attract 150,000 interested individuals every year.In the past ten years, the Army has become increasingly reliant on Commonwealth soldiers - from Fiji, South Africa and dozens of other countries - who now make up around 10 per cent of all British recruits.

I still think if you want to emigrate here you should have to serve a year or 2. Every Muslim I've talked to said he wouldn't join because he didn't want to shoot other Muslims.

We had an Army day at school. The local infantry came in and did some activities and an assembly. They did it too late, I think by the time you're 15 you're pretty said on your chosen career. 13 would be better.

Doesn't really concern me, afterall we got the Gurkhas etc.. and look at how they're viewed as elite

They were even thinking of creating a Sikh regiment (from British Sikhs). But it was put down because they didn't want to create a religion-specific regiment or something (I was reading a topic about it on arrse, all the soldiers on there seemed to have wanted it but it didnt happen)

you think Muslims living there might overpopulate certain regions that you are forced to give up the region due to them being a majority.

No I think if people want to live here they should contribute something first. That's the only thing Australia has that's better than us. That and better weather.

They say that but they rejected my friend because he had arthritis in his knees when he was 4.

He had to have a second medical exam and they finally let him in.

Don't they consider that not joining the army is a way of protesting against the "war"? We never wanted to go in anyway, and now that no Brits wants to go in they really are desperate.

Gurkhas, bloody hell, they are very scary, their squealing is very freaky, i talk to one named sue, he was all calm and nice, then when we did a nighttime camo thingy, he was running about in the dark squealing, he must have been half a mile off and we could hear him and his friends lol

(they were suppose to catch us, which they did, sneaky Gurkhas lol)

They should have a separate draft Army. Like Cannon fodder. So's to not bring down the skill of the normal Army.

If i understand right, the Army is open to anyone who is a citizen of the UK or R.Ire.

Though i could be wrong about that.

What a load of ballshit.

I got back from Selction today - They arn't in need of soldiers at all.
If they were in need they would have passed all 30 of the guy i did selection with - 15 passed, 15 failed or got deferred.

I passed and I must say - It ain't a walk in the park to get in.
Not for the fact they need numbers and only let certain through - But they need the best.
The Poles are goo at working - not good at fighting. The British Army does't go by who is best at working - They go by who is best at teamwork/fitness and overall commitment. The fucking Poles just need money. Let them go scrub the washrooms for fuck sake.

And I can see by the amount of recruits they are in no way in need or having a shortage of soldiers whatsoever.
In my view only tbh. ^

Lot of their stuff is really old, radios from the 80's and stuff, hell each Land Rover is like 25 years old. British Army often seems slow to upgrade with new equipment.

The poles had their own group in our forces during WWII i think, and IIRC, they were pretty amazing.
