Well, it's that time again. Spring's rolling around and I'll be getting 1) a better job 2) birthday money...oorah.

Here's what I'm thinking:

EVGA 790i Ultra SLi - $350
Core 2 Quad Q9450 - $316 (not out yet)
Patriot Viper DDR3-1333 - $380
EVGA 9800 GX2 - $599

And before someone comes in with a "omg ur spoiled and im immature cuz im gay looool" comment, I'm paying for ALL of this myself. I consider myself an enthusiast and I wouldn't consider myself as one if I didn't pay for atleast more than half. kthx. But, now. Questions.

Is DDR3 worth it? Should I just get a 780i and 4 gigs of DDR2-1066? Should I just stick with a dual-core? Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Money's not really an issue, but I'd always like to save.

You plan on going to college? Or do you not have to pay for that. That's a lot of money to be dropping on something that'll be worth hundreds of dollars less a few months down the road...

If you've got the the money though, go for it. Though DDR3 is still kinda not worth it in my opinion, at least at this point.

DDR3 = Fail IMO. Slightly lower voltages and ridiculously higher latencies are given from them.
DDR2 = 1066MHz /win. (4GB minimal)

Awesome choice on graphics! Upgrading myself to that over the summer..

Quad - I personally don't think it's worth it, but if you want to do it right (And OC it well) Get the one with the highest multiplier = highest overclock.

Mobo, don't know too much about, I personally have a P-35 and I'm content with it. I don't think SLI capabilities are necessary.

Well the DDR3 is overpriced IMO, just get 4 gigs of 1066/1333 MHz ram. Good choice on the motherboard.
Quadcore is unnecesairy for gaming, get an E8400 instead, but if you really want one: buy it.

The 9800GX2 is a huge waste of money, it only scores like a little better than the 3870X2, that costs ~ $420, while the 9800gx2 costs 600.

Here in the netherlands you can get 2 x 3870x2 for 660 euro( €330 per piece), while one 9800gx2 alone costs 600

So i'd say get an x38/x48 motherboard(nvida chipset + ATI card = ???? ) + one or two 3870x2's + 4 gigs of 1066 DDR2 ram = winzor.

Damn I wish I bough a Q6600 G0 instead of my E6750 in the first place. Now I need to change it to Q6600. Trust me Poseidon, you are making a good deal buying the quad core instead of E8400. At least we can pwn in 3dmark06, lol. And have fun with 9800GX2. I'm sure it is one hell of gfx card. I'm going the ATi way with tri-fire.

edit: quad cores are the win in gaming if you OC them. It is the faster stock clocks that make the E8400 faster in games.

if you want to save. dont waste your money on computer upgrades just for the sake of a few $50.00 games. i was in that particular business only to loose more money. if you want to save money get a console. tell me something, are you going to blow more money 2 years from now when your rig goes obsolete? just a thought m8

Q6600 OCed @3.6 stable
4gb of corsair xms2 memory
evga 780i mobo
evga 8800gt
tuniq tower 120

and i am very pleased in this build. Quad Core is worth the money and you stay at the head of the game. soo 780i FTW

No, sorry to wake you up but an 9800GX2 costs €500 here, that's a little more than a single 3870X2, and a lot less than dual 3870X2 while the performance blasts you away.
I'm gonna upgrade to the 9800GX2 from an 8800GTX these days anyway. It's like an awesome card. And get a SLi motherboard, seriously what if you want to SLi/Quad-SLi later, you'll slap yourself to the forehead you didn't take that awesome 790i. I have a P35 myself, and would have wanted a SLi mobo but now I don't have enough money/too lazy to get one. Go with the setup you picked, it's great, just DDR2 1066/1333 4GB, DDR3 = fail atm.

price of 9800GX2 is just ridiculous here... 570€ 9800GX2 vs 315€ HD3870 X2...

and Poseidon, make sure your PSU's 8-pin connector fits the 9800GX2.

Like the Guru3D described the issue: "has a very anal 8-pin power connector"

Well, I have a Thermaltake Toughpower 750w right now. I'm pretty sure my 8800 GTX (which I'm selling) requires an 8 pin connector?

N that basically kills the 9800GX2 argument lol. Less you absolutley HAVE to go with an intel board. If the 9800GTX is a 8800GTS, hell, you could Tri SLI the 9800GTX for about the same money as that dam GX2.

Dude, get the dual GTS' instead of the GX2. The minimal gains in performance do not warrant the $600 price tag. In fact the only reason I would see to get the GX2 is to get better frames in Crysis(as the 8800gts G92 handles every other game with ease) but it fails even there as the frames drop to shit when you turn on AA.

At least wait a few weeks to see how the 9800gtx performs, as the rumors are that it will kick ass in an SLI configuration.
