So I have this friend who's terribly demented and deranged and in class he went into another one of his fits where he shows that to everyone by arguing a few horrible opinions. He argued that all and any reason for anything doesn't exist then he contradicted himself and said that we should kill off humans and let people die of horrible conditions to try and 'fix?' the world... I argued that it's dumb to argue things like that because he obviously feels the same feelings other humans do and he's just lying to himself by denying that those things matter...

Anyways.. Do you guys ever run into nihilists? have you ever tried to argue with one?
I just want to see what others feel on this matter.

Yeah.. Its kind of hard to try and steer them right because the perception they have on the world allows them to inaccurately understand information being given to them.

They really do live in a hellish version on reality.

meh that's a bit like the 'perfect world' idea me and a classmate were talking about, his opinion is to dispose the world of all who posses physical/heavy mental weaknesses so all you have left is a society full of 'perfect humans'

Sounds a bit like Plato's idea on a perfect society, all those two have in common though is that they fail horribly when trying to make it practical, which won't work. I'm not really annoyed or angered by him, I just wave off his ideas and tell him why he's wrong, after that he'll accept; he's a bit egocentric/ antisocial (I'm like the only guy in class that can get around with him though)

In theory everything is possible, pessimistic/nihilistic people just need to be talked to patiently and they'll come to the understanding that what they're thinking of is horribly wrong. (Unless they're the obscenely arrogant type that won't accept any argument against his beliefs - I just won't bother with these they'll learn their lesson later on in life when they have to take care of themselves)

Yeah. seems like the same situation.

It's kind of troublesome with the arrogant types because everything turns into a debate and they always try and illegitimize everything you say by just blowing it off as pointless. I hope for their sake they can look at things a different light eventually in their lives.

Well yeah it is, I usually try to find factual information to see wether someone has tried what they thought of before (Plato is a good example in 9/10 cases, he fucked up his friends' kingdom by letting loose his stupid ideas.) Then they'll see "Hey shit this is wrong" but they'll keep trying. As I said, once they get out of the house - meet other people in their jobs and generally need to run their own lives they'll realise that they're only digging their own graves by acting the way they do.

Most of these people were complemented on by their parents once too much and they're putting a wall inbetween other people and themselves. They'll see what's coming to them when they haven't got their parents to back them up infinitely anymore; hopefully also realise that they've got weaknesses of their own aswell.
