Seriously, Hillary scares me (scary laugh anyone?). and looks like she sucked on a lemon for the past 20 years. And Obama's alright, but he has almost no experience, and no experience in Foreign Policy.

I'm still confused as to why it was the end of his campaign?
I've only read articles about it, but it sounds like it was a great speech, maybe a speech that will go down in history. It definitely made me appreciate Obama more. He did an excellent job explaining the perspective of Rev. Wright and the members of his church. I don't think anyone has ever done that to such a large audience. It sounds like he said Rev. Wright's views are wrong and divisive, but understandable, and maybe even justified. I'm not sure I disagree with that.
But--
Obama essentially admitted he was being misleading in his HuffingtonPost piece a couple of days ago when he said he hadn't heard any of Rev. Wright's controversial statements.
And he displayed amazing ignorance when he said radical Islam is responsible for the Israeli-Arab conflict. It's nearly irrelevant.
However, at least for now, he did largely neutralize the Rev. Wright issue for me.
I don't really matter, unfortunately. I'm sure he didn't neutralize it for the general electorate (i.e., Republicans). And race is not going to be a particularly important topic for the next President. The collapse of the US financial system and chaos in the middle east are going to be higher priorities.

From what I've read and heard, this pastor Wright is like a family member to Sen. Obama. Maybe he cannon simply cast away a family member, or explain or justify their every statement.
Maybe Sen. Obama can explain Wright at the same time Sen. McCain explains Hagee.

Or the Keeting five check scandle thingy.

After reading the transcript and letting the words sink in, I have to say that is probably one of the most inspiring things I've read in a long time.
I don't know if Obama is going to win this or not, but at least I now know without a doubt he would be best for the job.
It's kind of a weird feeling when you read something that very effectively assaults something that's been plaguing you for a long time and finally kills it. Obama quite clearly explained exactly why hate and cynicism have divided us, and after realizing my own cynicism was part of the problem, it was basically a liberating experience finding the energy to dispel it -- if for a while at least.
I'm not going to point any fingers, but I think even this thread has displayed some of the kind of cynicism he was talking about.
Whatever the case, there is a very simple lesson to this all. If we want to make this a better nation, it requires unity. So we can continue bickering and bitching, but if we don't put aside our differences for even just a moment, we're just going to continue going downward.
I really don't see Hillary or McCain providing the kind of unity Obama offers. We won't fall if either of them win, but we will likely have to deal with the "distractions" that Obama mentioned. ....and things will just keep going on as usual....

Obama certainly has that ability doesn't he? Inspiration at such a high level in our society is important for the overall good of our nation, and of our people on a whole. Someone who has the ability to speak so well, and fluidly without having to follow a prompter all the time, is an intelligent man who, even though does not have much skill in foreign policy, I am certain he has the ability to win hearts, and minds over seas and can decrease the amount of hatred in this world.
Nature is a powerful force. Those who seek to subdue nature, never do so permanently.
The only thing about Obama that worries me is that maybe he's giving us too much credit... Factionalism seems almost inevitable in our society.
The greatest weakness of diversity is factionalism.... even the Founding Fathers saw that one coming....

Which I believe is why they empowered via the 2nd Amendment to avoid over factionalism.Turquoise wrote:

Perhaps... but in a modern sense, I think this Wright incident may continue to haunt Obama in his campaign despite the fact that he's clearly very little like Wright.
Wright and him may be spiritually close, but it's pretty obvious that Obama comes to very different conclusions than Wright.
What worries me is that most people won't even bother to take a closer look, while the media sensationalizes this to absurdity.
Factionalism may translate into a McCain win.

I watched his speech, and it was rather moving.....
Then I looked at the facts. Obama has been listening to this trash for 20 years. He called Reverand Wright his "spiritual guide". How can you possibly listen to a man who consistantly make remarks that are racist, anti-semetic, ant-american, hateful and untrue? I see his speech as a brilliant attempt to put this behind him. He had no choice but to go up there and lie like he did.
There's no way that I could vote for him now. Either he is a brilliant lying politician who agrees with some of his reverent's hateful remarks, or he is a very poor judge of character who turns a blind eye to the hateful views of precieved friends. It becomes an example of his inexperience. It could be very damaging to America if he ever made a similar mistake during negotiations with other countries.

So he denies hearing the hate filled comments. Then a few days later, he says he did hear them. Ok. He denounces the comments, yet doesn't distance himself from the person who said them. I know I wanted to say more but I lost my train of thought right now, 1am. I guess people buy into this rhetoric.
I've seen remarks within this very thread that are obviously from people who have had their opinions handed to them. It's completely clear that they haven't even heard the entire speech. They look like fools asking questions that were answered directly in the speech. Enjoy the Kool-aide.Turquoise wrote:

Obama just confirms that he has no real principles.

I was particularly impressed with this part:
Not necessarily that it's anything that I haven't heard before (or have even said before), but for a major pol to actually say it takes some stones. Since they all tend to be so craven and fucking risk-averse (I'm looking at you Clinton and McCain). For we have a choice in this country. We can accept a politics that breeds division, and conflict, and cynicism. We can tackle race only as spectacle - as we did in the OJ trial - or in the wake of tragedy, as we did in the aftermath of Katrina - or as fodder for the nightly news. We can play Reverend Wright's sermons on every channel, every day and talk about them from now until the election, and make the only question in this campaign whether or not the American people think that I somehow believe or sympathize with his most offensive words. We can pounce on some gaffe by a Hillary supporter as evidence that she's playing the race card, or we can speculate on whether white men will all flock to John McCain in the general election regardless of his policies.
We can do that.
But if we do, I can tell you that in the next election, we'll be talking about some other distraction. And then another one. And then another one. And nothing will change.
That is one option. Or, at this moment, in this election, we can come together and say, "Not this time." This time we want to talk about the crumbling schools that are stealing the future of black children and white children and Asian children and Hispanic children and Native American children. This time we want to reject the cynicism that tells us that these kids can't learn; that those kids who don't look like us are somebody else's problem. The children of America are not those kids, they are our kids, and we will not let them fall behind in a 21st century economy. Not this time.
There is a third choice!!!!ATG wrote:

I will end illegal immigration, tell Iran to go fuck itself, catch Bin Laden with minimull colateral damage (If I have to blow up a few civilians I am content with it!), find and drill oil on our own soil (as to end the exploitation of America by terrorist nations i.e. Saudi Arabia, Iran etc.), stop universal government health care in its tracks, and actually tackle the social security issue head on!
Not too mention leaving Iraq when the job IS DONE! Not cut and run just cause some liberal asshole thinks we are losing when he/she has no clue as to the reality on the ground (the surge worked people, its time to acknowlege that and finish the job). It may have been a mistake going into Iraq, but its an even graver mistake to leave when we havent finished the job yet!!
Oh yea I almost forgot! End government pensions to ALL politicans and their spouses! These pensions are unnecessary and undeserved! That money should be redistributed to the needy or suffering school districts around the country!
Remember FADEDSTEVE 08' as the obvious write in candidate!!!
