While I still have issues with Obama's judgement in sitting in the pew for 20 years listening to this character...and then bringing someone with professed views like his into his campaign...
I have to agree with Turq's earlier post. It was a very inspiring speech. I hope, should Obama get the Dem nomination, that this lapse in judgement is not indicative of his overall approach, but rather an aberration.
I was at Arlington Cemetery this week, showing family around (and visiting a friend's grave). We stopped by JFK's burial site and I noticed--
really noticed--the engraved words that border one side:
LET THE WORD GO FORTH
FROM THIS TIME AND PLACE
TO FRIEND AND FOE ALIKE
THAT THE TORCH HAS BEEN PASSED
TO A NEW GENERATION OF AMERICANS
LET EVERY NATION KNOW
WHETHER IT WISHES US WELL OR ILL
THAT WE SHALL PAY ANY PRICE - BEAR ANY BURDEN
MEET ANY HARDSHIP - SUPPORT ANY FRIEND
OPPOSE ANY FOE TO ASSURE THE SURVIVAL
AND THE SUCCESS OF LIBERTY
NOW THE TRUMPET SUMMONS US AGAIN
NOT AS A CALL TO BEAR ARMS - THOUGH EMBATTLED WE ARE
BUT A CALL TO BEAR THE BURDEN OF A LONG TWILIGHT STRUGGLE
A STRUGGLE AGAINST THE COMMON ENEMIES OF MAN
TYRANNY - POVERTY - DISEASE - AND WAR ITSELF
IN THE LONG HSTORY OF THE WORLD
ONLY A FEW GENERATIONS HAVE BEEN GRANTED
THE ROLE OF DEFENDING FREEDOM
IN ITS HOUR OF MAXIMUM DANGER
I DO NOT SHRINK FROM THIS RESPONSIBILITY
I WELCOME IT
THE ENERGY - THE FAITH - THE DEVOTION
WHICH WE BRING TO THIS ENDEAVOR
WILL LIGHT OUR COUNTY
AND ALL WHO SERVE IT
AND THE GLOW FROM THAT FIRE
CAN TRULY LIGHT THE WORLD
AND SO MY FELLOW AMERICANS
ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU
ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY
MY FELLOW CITIZENS OF THE WORLD - ASK NOT
WHAT AMERICA CAN DO FOR YOU - BUT WHAT TOGETHER
WE CAN DO FOR THE FREEDOM OF MAN
WITH A GOOD CONSCIENCE OUR ONLY SURE REWARD
WITH HISTORY THE FINAL JUDGE OF OUR DEEDS
LET US GO FORTH TO LEAD THE LAND WE LOVE - ASKING HIS BLESSING
AND HIS HELP - BUT KNOWING THAT HERE ON EARTH
GOD'S WORK MUST TRULY BE OUR OWN
I realized how long it had been since we had a President who could so eloquently express hard-to-define ideas. Obama certainly can do that.
Even though, IMO, the Rev Wright issue was not about race, the fact that Obama decided to make it about race has been beneficial to the overall discussion (it certainly benefits him because it removes the focus from his poor judgement). While the cynic in me believes his shift in focus is an exercise in self-preservation, I also recognize that he has picked a scab that has needed picking for a long time in this country. He addresses not just the concerns of the minorities, but also the concerns of the majority. He points out that racism takes many forms, and all sides are guilty of it. That is a national discussion that needs to take place--has needed to take place for a very long time. It's just a shame that it couldn't have taken place absent this Presidential campaign season.
