Camcorder and Widescreen TVs

Quick question.

My girlfriends dad was told by someone in a shop that he should not get a miniDV camcorder because when you watch on a widescreen TV there will be distortion (or something like that)

Now to me this sounds like a load of balls. Only thing that will cause something like this is if you have a HDTV and you are not able to upscale through the dvd player. But on a SD widescreen, there should be no issues apart from it not being in widescreen format.

Am I talking rubbish and was this person in the shop actually correct?

I have one of those mini-DVD video recorders, if that's what you're talking about.

I didn't notice any distortion, but the quality was obviously lower than blockbuster movies

well if you record in 4:3 (which most camcorders should) and you view it on a 16:9 screen, you'll either need to stretch the picture (thus distorting it) or have black bars on the side

yeah, that is what i am saying. No one would stretch it if they know about that sort of stuff.

@Jenspm, it is a miniDV (digital video. older skool format ). It doesnt compress the video when it records so the quality is supposed to be better than the dvd recording cameras.

I think the person (probably a woman ) was taking a lot of nonsense in the shop.

HardDrive camcorders w/multiple drives>all. MiniDV itself is fine though, as long as you have a way to play it. And if you dont want distortion, just buy a widescreen cammy.

Just make sure the video is flagged 4:3 format if you convert it to DVD. As you said miniDV is better quality than MiniDVD so I would stick to miniDV or HDD camcorder. MiniDVD is only realy useful for watching on a DVD player without editing the video but if you have a PC to do the editing use the better quality camcorders.
