Today I spent a very long discussing the issue of the age for students to drop out of school. Frankly, I'm sick of walking into class rooms and trying to learn something to advance myself towards college while everyday in almost all of my classes we spend half the time going over everything we have heard from day one because in every single one of my classes there are 2 or more kids who walk in with no interest in learning. So they come in high on whatever they can get their hands on, or try their best to disrupt the class for everyone else. So I think to myself, abolish the dropout age, if these kids don't want to learn or are coming to school just so they can get some more Vikadin or Xanax let them! Stop wasting tax payer money and let them drop out at any age they feel like. Stop them disrupting our classrooms and slow drug trafficking hugely. If these kids choose to fail, by all means LET THEM.

In Florida you must be 16 to legally drop out of school, you may come back and get your GED, but with this you will not be able to get into a college or pursue higher education.

So the question is; would this cut drug trafficking in schools and stop wasting tax payer money, or would we find ourselves with an abundance of adults who wish they would have finished there high school education and were not working at 7-11 the rest of their lives or selling drugs, overall being further detrimental to society.

As for people who drop out because they just don't care... more employees for people who care about furthering their education.

You are very limited though, a community college yes, where you must take 2 years before you can go to a state university and get a degree.

I'm pretty sure that this is going to be what will happen.
More and more kids are going to drop out, and when they grow up a little they'll realize what kind of mistake they made.

Terrible idea.  But the idea of forcing those who don't want to learn in with those who do isn't much better. 

My highschool had different levels of classes.  There were honors, regents, merit, and basic.  The real pieces of work were in the merit and basic classes.  Then the rest of the cannon fodder were stuck in the regents level classes, and those who wanted to go to a good college were in the honors/AP classes.  I didn't have the same trouble you have, but I guess that really comes down to what the school has the resources to do.

Yeah, totally agree... it's rather far beyond being a "bad idea."

He's right about the problem though certainly wrong about the solution (his conclusion). He's described a problem that's been a long standing issue for public education everywhere. How do your get an "ego" (a hormone infested, somewhat confused, boundary testing, social animal : a teen) motivated, disciplined and infected with a love for: ideals, culture, society, country, world, knowledge, truth... and so on. If there isn't a parent behind the scene motivating the individual or the individual is not self-motivated - what do you do? Giving up and letting them go is hardly a solution. That's simply delaying a social problem till a latter date.

The public school system lacks internal/external competition and lacks authority/discipline for those clearly un-disciplined cases (those kids lacking discipline, motivation or parents that can/do motivate their child).

I've heard/seen a lot of really good solutions to this common problem, but don't think I'll see any of them being implemented, The inertia of the current system, school boards, general philosophies/worldviews, teachers unions, and the like will keep anything, that could positively affect this common problem, from happening.

I never said this was the best plan of action, I do realize this would just create a further problem for these kids later in life. We only have 3 levels of classes and very often kids are wrongly placed in higher level classes, so they continue to be a disruption. So, what are some of the solutions to this problem?

I think that 3 levels of classes is just about all you can do.  No politician in their right mind will want to answer to this policy.  If we are to believe in a global economy, and a better education leads to the public becoming more globally competitive, then by allowing a high percentage of students to choose not to be educated might result in a less competive situation.

Have you tried talking with the teacher yet?  Have you tried talking with the department chair?  Have you discussed the issue with your parents/PTO board?  Have you tried talking with the principal?

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes. Most of their answers are.. they are still passing the class with a D, they are smart kids who just have a problem, or I'm sorry to hear that we're trying our best to remove these kids. They have done a wonderful job of doing absolutely nothing.

you dont really need even a GED/diploma to get into a community college, I should know.

I did get my GED eventually, but only after 1 year of college. Then a AAS in networking focus. I should go to some university, but UNLV/UNR are rubbish imo. Maybe one of these day's in my dodage when I live outside of vegas I will

sorry to say, allowing people to quit school whenever they want doesn't abolish drugs in schools.

Concentrate harder? I'm first in my class thank you for the advice though...

I ended my original post with a question, and most people have agreed that these people would just be further detrimental to society, so give me some different views and solutions is all I asked for.

So how do you solve the problem of kids who don't care or come to school for illegal purposes only?

Because they are too stupid or lazy to see a purpose in an education and the necessary work.
