A website that a Dutch right-wing politician was planning to use to release a film expected to be fiercely critical of Islam has been suspended.
I think when this film is released the Muslims in The Netherlands are gonna see the Dutch as racist and riots will break out. Geert Wilders has said not to shelve the film and called the Muslims 'Attackers of Freedom' which Islam organisations have negotiated with a Church!. This is causing a serious problem.

What do you think are the consequences of this film

If Muslims want to live in societies that have joined the 21st century, they need to tag along for the ride.

They once put something on the TV that I didn't want to watch.

I turned the channel over. Wasn't that hard.

Free weed and prostitutes.

I'm sure they have personal free speech as well, just the television network didn't want riots.

Hey, I'd love to visit Amsterdam, but I wouldn't want to live in a country where consolations like this are made for the sake of PC.

The shutting down of website? It was an American company.

Or did I just totally misunderstand that?

It was an American company censoring itself to comply with Dutch legislation.  They were afraid that the content of the site violated Dutch laws.

Hence, if the laws were more lenient like America's, this wouldn't be an issue.

Is there any other link besides the beeb one? Upon reading the article I got the impression that people griped to Network Solutions, and they suspended it to appease them. Or did the request come from the dutch government?

While you are correct that complaints seem to be the source of the issue here, I would think that the threat of being sued might have something to do with this.

Keep in mind that the creator of this film has been under police protection for a while now.  That should imply the level of resentment currently present in the Netherlands against this film.  When you consider events like the murder of Theo Van Gogh, it doesn't seem like that much of a stretch to assume that a good portion of the Muslim community in the Netherlands is militant.

So, I suppose I should rephrase my original statement.  The Netherlands needs to actively push for the protection of free speech in the face of such militance, and the American company's action in this is not helping matters.

Does that make more sense?

of course not, probably some angry Muslims...

hell even the NMO (Muslim Broadcast Station) here said they were considering broadcasting the vid under some rules (like seeing it beforehand)

the shutting down of that site has nothing to do with Dutch right freedom of speech....

Network took it off the air for possible violation of it's own rules...

most of you don't even know what this guy shouts about in our "second chamber" < government room...

Theo van Gogh said whatever he wanted, he was against Muslims (radicals) > murdered on the street.
Pim Fortuyn (Politician) was pre Geert Wilders, Geert is trying a cheap Fortuyn rip off in my eyes, Fortuyn > murdered.

we got our dealings with this kind of stuff and the Government is now pretty cautious about doing anything

It's like if Abu Hamza (perhaps a touch less extreme) made a film about the evils of Western society and wanted to air it on the BBC. It wouldn't get played, not for reasons to do with freedom of speech, but because the network wouldn't want to broadcast that sort of hate speech.

If people are getting murdered over this sort of thing, it sounds like maybe they aren't so wrong after all.

They are very wrong and Geert Wilders is a fuckwit. Listen to what people from the Netherlands who are actually acquainted with the situation have to say. This is a man who wanted the Dutch constitution suspended to combat Islam and suggested getting Muslims immigrating to the Netherlands to tear up the Koran.

...and if Muslims kill these people instead of shrugging off their nonsense, that only legitimizes what they are saying.

Look, as I've said before, most Muslims are sensible people, but perhaps, the kinds of Muslims that end up in the Netherlands are more extremist than the ones who come to places like America.  There seems to be a good amount of evidence in various countries like the U.K., France, and the Netherlands that Muslims might be generally more militant in Europe than the Muslims who come to America.

It kind of makes sense if you think about it.  It takes a lot more effort to come all the way to America than it does to immigrate to Europe.  It would make sense that mostly Muslims that are more liberal would go so far as to enter America because of the effort involved.   A lot of the Muslims that come to Europe seem only interested in economic opportunity, which is understandable, but it also looks as if some of them have brought with them a serious lack of tolerance.

Only takes one nutter...

It wasn't a Muslim who murdered Fortuyn anyway. Just a Dutchman pissed off with all his hateful rhetoric.

Which tells us what?

I wouldn't doubt it.  However, again, if the Muslims fall prey to hatred as a result of his manipulations, doesn't that say something about their own failings?

If any other group started assassinating public figures, I seriously doubt you'd be as forgiving of them.  Let's say Jews started killing prominent Muslims in the Netherlands.  How would you feel towards the Jews in general?
