My PC worked fine this morning,.. now it fails to render certain graphics in any game. I deinstalled all graphics drivers, cleansed the registry and reinstalled the latest drivers, but that didn't fix it

It's odd, the desktop looks fine, webbrowsers, everything works fine, but games suddenly show vertical and/or horizontal lines with certain textures (and with certain textures only). What's even queerer is that I'm also getting these lines with the Windows XP bootup screen, even in between after I uninstalled the old graphics drivers and before I installed the new ones (machine was running on VGA only).

Mind that I didn't do anything, didn't download, clicked or installed anything. I was playing Guild Wars, logged off, a minute later my little brother booted the game, logged in and wham; it was messed up.

Any ideas?

Your graphics card is propably overheating. Those 7800's tend to get mighty hot too, blow out the cooler of it.

Also, don't use a vacuum cleaner if you considered that.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Lol, I haven't got a 7800 yet, it's on a 256mb Radeon x600,.. passive cooling.

Well, it plays BF2 on 1024x786x32, no AA, everything on high (except Dynamic Shadows, that's off, but Dynamic Lighting is on High) fine; and Doom 3 plays fine maxed as well XD

Hmmm,.. maybe this is a good excuse to push myself in buying a new (second hand, lol) graphics card,.. I'm such a greedy bastard

Doesn't sound like a driver problem if it started happening without you changing any drivers (or anything else).

Probably a hardware problem. Did you try taking the vid card out, dusting it off and putting it back in? Could also be a power supply problem. It would be useful to see what happened if you tried a different video card or put your card in another machine.

Also, it's obviously your little brother's fault.

Hmmm,.. I'll take it out as soon as my downloads are ready, but isn't it strange it only bugs at certain graphics and not even the "difficult" ones?

Could still be overheating, if enough dust is collected on the heatsink, the airflow in the case won't do much good. Also, dust on top of the card might be shorting it out. Just blow it out with a straw.

Shut down the PC, took out the card, but it was pretty clean. Made sure it was even cleaner, wrapped it in tin-foil, put it in the fridge. Took it out the fridge an hour later and put it back in the PC, but no difference.

Yes, I considered the freezer as well, but though that might damage the circuits.

I'd be kinda worried about condensation?

Well there's no current on it, just make sure it's dry before you put it back.

lol, maybe you should wrap a towel around it and then put it in the fridge. But anyhow, your x600 seems to be fucked, it's time for a new one .
Now what is  your budget? As I understand that you don't want to spend much money, go for either an nvidea 8800GS or ATI 3850 those cost around less than $150 and have an really good performance. Altough the 8800GS stock cooler seems to be a bit noisy, i'd go for the 3850.
