So yeah, I got this "new", leet laptop from my uncle to replace my bed computer and old laptop for web browsing, etc.

I've been using the lappy for a couple of days now, and not being able to utilize the mobility due to my stinkin' short Ethernet cables is really annoying the shit out of me. If I wanna have the computer in the bed, I gotta have a hub to extend the networks cables, if I wanna use it on my desk for chatting, etc, I gotta re-route the whole damn setup!

(Read: Unplug hub from ethernet cable, unplug hub from power, move power adapter, plug in hub using the ethernet cable for the gaming rig, put in cable from hub to gaming rig, put in cable from hub to laptop, crawl all over to get the cable to the laptop, and then share a 5Mbit connection between the two, since the hub is from the mid 90s.)

On top of that, I'm giving my old lappy to my mom, so that she can start exploring the internet and computers, and I'm not routing a cable from my room, to the kitchen and to her room.

So, I'm currently looking at the cheapest possible solution available:

15€ PCMCIA wireless adapter for my old lappy
29:35€ wireless g router

I'm pretty much set for the wireless adapter, as she doesn't need much, at max 5 meters away and though one wall. The router, though, is what I'm a bit concerned about; What are the gains in getting a more expensive g router? My school is about 40 meters away from my window, so I thought that I might put the router in the window and try accessing from a corner of the school. if you've got some suggestions of other routers, please pick one that canbe found here. (If the page seems fucked-up or is in swedish/finnish, go through www.multitronic.fi).
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Bearing in mind Freeze if you cheap out totally you could end up disconnects, range issues etc.

Yes, but I'm a little bit concerned about range and stability, if I wanna reach to the school.

The max range of a g-signal indoors is around 35 meters. Outdoors it's around 150.

+ the range is lessened by walls etc.

802.11n would definately get to your school, as the range is twice as far.

n is good, but like jenspm said, the walls are what kill ya.  if they are made of brick, forget it.  we had a problem at my work with that issue, trying to push a wireless signal into the classrooms, but they were surrounded by brick walls so it was pretty weak.  we ended up having to put the APs right in the rooms.

The last thing you want is to buy a poor quality wireless card. I'd recommend spending that little bit extra on decent branded wireless solutions such as NETGEAR or Linksys.

Say, what would the difference between this, this, [url=http://www.multitronic.fi/?prod=WRT54GS]and this be? especially yhe two last. And would an antenna like this make any difference?

my wireless router cost me 50 with a 20 mail in rebate.  It works through out the house.  I have to go to the far end and the signal weakens to good(yellow).

Just a reference, if it has a clear view you might be able to get a signal from your school.

Not bad seeing the stats and the price...
